The Model Health Show (general)

How often do you read good fiction books? There was a stretch of maybe half a decade where I, although an avid reader, avoided reading any fiction because I believed that it was not productive. I read countless nutrition books, books on fitness, books on personal development, and more. They all contained a lot of facts and theories (which were great) but I was missing on something really special for my life.

Luckily, a few years back after the poking and prodding of several people, I picked up a book called The Alchemist and it shined a bright light in a part of my mind that I had been neglecting. Little did I know that there was significant research touting the benefits of reading fiction. You can see marked changes in the brain, bolstered creativity, and so much more than the average person isn’t informed about. My rekindled love of fiction eventually led me to one of my favorite authors, Dan Millman, which is why I’m so excited to share this with you today! One of Dan’s books, that I read several years ago, still sits on my nightstand to this day (well, until I picked it up and brought it to the studio with me to record this).

Thanks to Dan and other amazing authors, I’ve been able to foster new connections in my mind, paint more vibrant pictures than ever before, and I know it’s helped me to connect and relate with others so much more. If you’re not reading fiction books every now and then, I think this will be very inspirational in you doing so. Whether it’s physical books or audiobooks, storytelling (and story listening) is one of the things that makes us more human, and keeps our minds open to the possibility of everything. Dan is a remarkable person with a remarkable story. So, just click play, listen deeply, and soak it all in. Enjoy!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • The surprising benefits that reading fiction has on your brain.
  • Why it’s important to be strong in multiple directions.
  • What luck really is.
  • What inspired Dan to write book that imbues fiction with autobiography.
  • What it means to be a Peaceful Warrior.
  • How paradox exists in all aspects of our lives.
  • Why embracing the concept of change can quickly transform your life.
  • Why comparing yourself to others can lead to suffering and how today’s social media explosion can add even more fuel to the fire.
  • How self-acceptance can be a way to inner peace.
  • Why everything you do matters.
  • How giving up can still lead to success (as long as you do this one key thing!).
  • What Dan does to stay vital and healthy at 71-years old (he’s still doing handstands and somersaults!).

For many of us, we believe that our past = our future. We often carry a subconscious belief that no matter what we do, things will always be just more of the same.

Even as we grow older, there’s a tendency to replay just slightly different versions of the same year over and over again. But, as Robin Sharma said, we want to catch ourselves in the act of this craziness and, “don’t live the same year 75 times and call it a life.”

So, how do we actually break the mold and change the course and direction of our lives if we want to? How do we change our experience of life as a whole, and live a life of more health, happiness, and fulfillment? Well, as you’ll discover today, it all intrinsically happens when you alter what’s happening inside of you, not outside of you. When you learn how to alter your traits, you learn how to live an altered reality.

You may have lived your life as a victim for some time. You might have felt weak and incapable in a life with so many burdens and obstacles. But by altering your traits, you can (from the inside out) live life with more strength, power, and perseverance than you could’ve ever dreamed possible. That’s because it was the old you who was doing the dreaming, and not the upgraded version of yourself who’s ready and waiting dormant inside each and every cell in your body.
Now the questions is: how to we actually develop altered traits? For that, I’d like to introduce you to world renowned psychologist and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Daniel Goleman.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • The difference between genetic traits and personality traits.
  • How our environment can change our traits.
  • How meditation can influence heart health.
  • What emotional intelligence really means.
  • Which capacity reigns supreme in IQ versus EQ.
  • Whether or not your emotional intelligence can be changed.
  • What it means to have cognitive control.
  • What mirror neurons are and how they were accidentally discovered.
  • How conventional psychology can fall short in helping people to be healthy and happy.
  • Why meditation is like going to the gym for your brain.
  • What it means to have wholesome traits of being.
  • How having a sense of purpose influences your health and well-being.
  • What mindfulness is.
  • How multitasking affects our performance.
  • The type of meditation that grows your level of compassion.
  • The 3 kinds of empathy.
  • How "olympic level meditators" have brains that are different from the average person.
  • What an amygdala hijack is and why we need to better manage our amygdala today.
  • How meditation influences brain aging.
  • What some of the proven, valuable benefits of meditation are.

I love the quote from Marianne Williamson that says, “With confidence, you can reach truly amazing heights; without confidence, even the simplest accomplishments are beyond your grasp.”

How much does confidence really play into our lives? Well, if we take a step back we can see that confidence plays a major role in ALL of the decisions we make. Humans don’t act without an underlying sense of confidence. We have confidence in simple things like our ability to walk out our front door and successfully make it to our job. And we have confidence in bigger things like telling someone you love them for the first time, choosing the right college to attend, or going after the dream career we really want. How much confidence we carry will decide how strongly we approach all these things, or even if we decide do them at all!

Here’s the thing… confidence is a learned behavior. Sure, there are outliers that have a genetically higher tolerance for risk, but for the most part, the most confidence people on the planet built that confidence by doing the work. Now, the question is, what does that work actually entail? How can we all build our confidence so that we are showing up better in our work, in our relationships, and in our health practices? To answer that, I decided to bring on one of the most confident people I know. She’s an undefeated world champion, she’s been successful in everything from boxing, to dancing, to hosting network television, to being a mom (which can be the most demanding thing on confidence of all!). She’s here today on The Model Health Show to share her story, and to share how she was able to build her confidence despite meeting adversity around many corners. Just click play, listen in, and enjoy this conversation with the one and only Laila Ali.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How Laila first became interested in boxing (and it’s not what you think!).
  • Why doing work that you love doesn’t really feel like work.
  • The little known outside the ring battles that challenged Laila during her boxing career.
  • Why it can be difficult to uncover what you’re passionate about when you enter a new chapter of your life.
  • What inspired Laila to focus on creating a new career in health & wellness.
  • Why confidence is so important, and how to build it!
  • What Laila’s #1 fear is (yep, it’s the fear that a champion would have!).
  • How valuable failure really is and how it improves our lives.
  • Why Laila doesn’t follow any diet framework 100% (this is important!).

I remember watching a lecture from Dr. Bruce Lipton along with my wife and mother-in-law many years ago. After it was over, I saw the tears rolling down my mother-in-laws face as she was overwhelmed with emotion.

You see, she had been helping people from all walks of life to better themselves mind, body, and spirit for decades. I’d never meet anyone who was as loved and admired as her before, and I was always intrigued by the love that came from everyone’s mouth when they spoke of her.

She endured so much that most people never saw… and all that she went through enabled her to give at a level most people never experienced until they meet her. And, during that lecture from Dr. Lipton, she realized that what she believed all along was true… If you can help people to heal their minds and beliefs, you can help them to heal their bodies. The solution was always inside. That’s how she was able to help herself, and that’s how she was able to help so many others (myself included).

Dr. Lipton has a tendency to transform people’s paradigms. As a cellular biologist and leading voice in the field of epigenetics, he’s seen firsthand how our thoughts, feelings, and environment can affect the destiny of the 50 trillion plus cells that make each one of us up. Moreover, he’s brought to light that our 50 trillion plus cells function very much like a community. Everyone has jobs, everyone is affected in one way or another by everyone else, and though we’ve been indoctrinated with the theory of “survival of the fittest”, legitimate health and success is really about cooperation.

There’s no function that yourself, as a complete human being, can do that your individual cells cannot do as well. Your cells have reproductive functions, digestive functions, respiration functions, eliminatory functions, and the list goes on. Our cells really are sentient entities that are trying to work together for our good. And, as you’ll discover today, problems arise when the community is led astray by a governing body that’s running the show behind the scenes. It’s not your genes that control your destiny, and it’s not the things that are happening outside of you. It’s the biology of belief. So, without further ado, I’d like to introduce you to the one and only, Dr. Bruce Lipton!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Which drink is clinically proven to help improve your sleep at night.
  • What genetic determinism means.
  • How conventional medicine can inherently train us to be powerless.
  • How the environment can influence the destiny of a cell.
  • What stem cells can teach us about human potential.
  • How your brain creates chemistry to match your feelings and beliefs.
  • The important distinction between correlation and causation.
  • What our genes actually do (this is important!).
  • How the field of epigenetics is transforming health and medicine.
  • The percentage of diseases that are controlled by genes (this will surprise you!).
  • How our beliefs influence chronic diseases like cancer.
  • What the placebo effect really is and how effective placebo treatments are.
  • The fascinating way that certain cellular proteins function like television antennas.
  • Where the actual “brain” of the cell is found (and it’s not where you might think!).
  • How our perception impacts the functions of our cells.
  • The different roles that our conscious and subconscious mind plays.
  • How to switch out and upgrade our subconscious programs.

Scientist believe that approximately 50 percent of our happiness is genetically predetermined, while 10 percent is due to life circumstances, and 40 percent is the result of our own personal outlook. Whether or not you believe in genetic determinism, none of us can argue that our personal outlook (and in many ways our life circumstances) are within the power of our own hands to change.

Why, then, is happiness at a deficit today? With so much connection and so much opportunity, why has happiness become the exception and not the rule? There’s a relatively new field of science focusing on positive psychology and the underpinnings of what creates happiness from us. But nothing compares to the education that we get from someone who’s cracked the code on happiness personally. It’s the stories of success that really speak to hearts, and it’s the real world tools that help us to put what we learn into action.

Today you’re going to hear one of the most outstanding stories of how we can achieve happiness and success no matter what our circumstances have looked like. This person is an absolute superstar in so many different domains of personal development. She’s so good at it because she has been through it. I mean, really through it. And by braving her path, she’s figured out a thing or 20 that’s going to make an impact on your life for many years to come. Grateful, honored, and excited to share with you the incredible Lisa Nichols. Enjoy!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why being broke is easier than being broken.
  • Why we need to welcome the things that makes us decide.
  • What it means to have "gifts wrapped in sandpaper."
  • How to stop postponing your happiness.
  • Three "buckets" we can put our experiences in to bring us more fulfillment and success.
  • How having nothing to hide can free you from a lot of stress (and why the truth is sexy!).
  • How to increase our sense of value within ourselves (this is important!).
  • The life-threatening challenges that led Lisa to make one of the toughest decisions of her life.
  • Why shame can be one of the toughest burdens to carry.
  • How Lisa brings her healthy lifestyle with her (and how she changed the culture for the people around her).
  • Why it's important to serve from your overflow.
  • How good health spills over into other areas of your life in a positive way.
  • Why it's a MUST to "live like you know it".
  • What simple exercise we can do to help flush out the false things we believe about ourselves.

You can gain just as much weight eating gluten-free cupcakes as you do eating gluten-filled cupcakes.

We don’t want the latest marketing trend to be the demise of your health and fitness goals. Though many gluten-free efforts mean well, as with anything, marketers can really mess things up. They’ll take a good wholesome idea and you turn it into a tactic.

Gluten-free options came into play to enable folks with gluten sensitivities to still enjoy some of their favorite comfort foods. Then more gluten-free options hit the market to meet the demand of people finding out the big potential downsides of eating gluten. The next thing you know there’s a gluten-free label slapped on everything from soups, to salads, to potato chips, and pizza. I think I even saw someone sipping a gluten-free bottle of water the other day.

You’re about to get an in-depth look at the gluten-free phenomenon (and where our initial good intentions may have gotten off track). Plus, we’re covering some of the basics of the If It Fits Your Macros movement that’s hotter than men’s rompers right now.

It’s said that many things come into our lives for a reason, a season, of for a lifetime. When it comes to diet and nutrition we have to be able to roll with the punches and identify which thing is which. Today is all about adding more tools to your superhero utility belt to make the best decisions for yourself and the people you care about. Just click play, take good notes, and enjoy!

You’ve probably been hearing the news about WMDs from the media for many years. In fact, the media itself is often a WMD (Weapon of Mass Distraction). Today we are living in the time of the greatest distraction known to man. We’ve gained some prominence over acquiring food and water, most folks have a roof over their head, and meeting potential mates can be as easy as swiping right on your phone. But all of this newfound free time has opened up a blackhole of time to kill, and now we have an infinite amount of information to pour into it.

Sure dating today is a lot more like Wheel of Fortune than real life (I was always intrigued by those people who guessed just $1 for the price of a washing machine… why not $2? Why not 2???). The problem isn’t the apps and services, or the guessing that we do when we get on our devices. The problem is the sheer amount of data we all have to process each and every day of our lives now.

Because of this, most of us have simply outsourced a lot of our thinking to our smartphones. Basic calculations in our head? Nope, I’ve got a calculator for that. Remember my best friend’s new phone number? Nope, we might text or talk all the time, but my phone will remember your number for me - and if I lose my phone, well, I guess I lose you too… it’s been a great ride!.

Remembering appointments, managing money, etc. Our phones can do it all. And, in a strange way, our smartphones have now made us dumber. We may not have devolved to the point of our primitive ancestors, but have you seen how entertaining a fidget spinner is now? What reason can you give for it? Seriously!

Well, if you’re reading this, fidget spinner fan or not, I know that you’re someone who’s interested in living an amazing life. You would love to be healthy, fit, and happy, and have awesome relationships too. These things require study. And with so much information to go through, how in the world can we ever make the strides we want before we make the transition to the big world wide web in the sky?

The solution is simple, yet profound. In today’s world, where information is flying at you a thousand miles an minute, we must retrain our brains to learn in a new and powerful way. We all have an almost unlimited capability to learn, but we must learn how to unlock it. And for that, there’s only one expert I know who fits the bill. The man who companies like Virgin, Nike, Zappos, Fox Movie Studios, and Harvard University bring in to up-level their performance. The man who superstars in entertainment and industry like Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Jim Carrey, and Will Smith call on to help them learn faster and improve their memory. The one and only, Jim Kwik.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • The surprising effect that coffee has on your metabolism.
  • Why the all-time favorite method of study called cramming will cause you to fall short.
  • How digital distraction is zapping our brainpower.
  • How our smart devices can actually make us dumber.
  • How much of our memory is determined by genetics.
  • How multitasking compares to being high and sleep deprived.
  • Practical tips to help you avoid wasting too much time on social media when you need to get work done (this can help all of us!).
  • The difference between recognition and recollection.
  • What primacy and recency have to do with learning.
  • How music can influence memory and learning.
  • What spaced repetition is and how to use it to boost your brainpower.
  • Why your emotional state has an impact on memory.
  • How your memory is deeply connected to your sense of smell.
  • How important relevance is to memory and learning.
  • The most effective way to take notes (and things you should stop doing immediately!).

Why not start your body off each day in a fat-burning state? It’s as easy as drinking a glass of water… and here’s why.

A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that drinking just 17 ounces of water can increase your metabolic rate by up to 30%. Wait, what?! So, this whole drinking water to lose fat thing actually works? In short, yes. But the real gold is in the details.

The researchers in the study found that the total thermogenic response of drinking the water was a burn off of about 24 Calories. Just to be clear, this does not mean that chug-a-lugging gallons of water each day will have you burning massive amounts of calories. There’s an upper limit to this that easily gets bypassed by overdoing it on the aqua. Just like everything else in life, too much of even a good thing can quickly turn into a bad thing (unless it’s watching Game of Thrones… according to my wife, there’s no such thing as too much). Yet, the upper limit is definitely not the issue for the majority of people.

The average person today does not give their body the real hydration it needs. Chronic dehydration goes hand-in-hand with chronic disease, and still it’s disappointedly overlooked in the medical profession. Most people are not giving their body the water-induced thermogenic benefits possible for them because they are missing out on small keys that open big doors of health and wellness.

One, it’s water… not juice, not “vitamin water”, not gatorade, snakeade, or turtleade, not soda, not coffee… just WATER. Two, the actual quality of water matters. It matters in how it relates to your tissues. Specifically, the aquaporin channels that get the water from your belly into your cells. For more on that, make sure to check out the Hydration and Water Masterclass episode right after this one. Third, it’s how and when they drink the water. Follow up studies found that drinking 1 - 2 ounces of water had no significant thermogenic effect. Sippy sippin on the water bottle throughout the day just isn’t going to cut it. You need to get in a nice oil change a couple of times a day. Target 16 - 24 ounces to make the magic happen. And, as you’ll discover today, getting that first drink in to start your day has even more advantage, and might be a game-changing cornerstone of a morning routine that transforms your life.

Today you’ll learn how a consistent morning routine literally changes your brain and helps to set you up for success. You’ll also learn about morning routines of some of the most successful people on the planet, and real, tangible proof that their success (and having an effective morning routine) is not an accident. Just click play, take good notes, and enjoy!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How our daily actions determine our ultimate success.
  • Why a morning routine provides you with a valuable sense of certainty.
  • The science of momentum and how it inherently influences our lives.
  • How a consistent morning routine affects our brains.
  • The missing piece when people try to create new positive habits for themselves.
  • Why many of us start our days with high stress.
  • Why it's important to get hydrated as soon as your day begins.
  • The daily ritual that Warren Buffett uses to ensure his continued success.
  • How to train your mind to be more focused and resilient each day.
  • How to give your body a metabolic advantage each day.
  • Why the first food or beverage you have to start your day has a bigger impact on your performance.
  • The best way to ensure you accomplish your biggest goal for the day.
  • Additional morning routine components you can mix and match and experiment with.
  • Morning routines of some of the most successful and healthy people on the planet.

You’ve probably heard the statement before that “health is wealth”. But what does that mean exactly?

I believe that it’s a statement summarizing the fact that when you have your health, you have possibility. With good health you have the clarity, the vitality, and the energy to submit your will in life, and do the things that make your life worth living.

Without good health, everything in life can seem exponentially harder. And I know this from firsthand experience. It’s so much harder to have clarity and direction, there’s a feeling that something is holding you back, and mustering up the energy to do even small things is an enormous task. Health is wealth because it moves you more gracefully out of limited thinking. As our health improves, so does our energy and optimism. You start to feel richer (or, at least, more capable of becoming richer!).

Now, what if we flipped the statement around? Wealth is health? Would it still hold up as a fact? Well, our guest today will not only show exactly how our financial health impacts our mental and physical health, but also shares some ESSENTIAL strategies to build up your monetary muscles and ensure that you are fiscally fit.

Dr. Michael Roizen is the author of eight NY Times bestselling books, he's the Chief Wellness Officer at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic, and he's just an all-around incredible human being. I was so excited that he wrote his latest book tying in the deep connection between our health and our finances. With The Model Health Show we want to provide a model for being healthy and happy in every area of our lives. From fitness to finances, from food to family, all of it matters, and all of it makes us who we are. I’m honored to share Dr. Roizen’s wisdom with you here today. Just click play, take good notes, and put these things into action!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why having a longer lifespan can be a stressor financially.
  • How long the average American born today should expect to live.
  • What being born to splurge means.
  • Some of the surprisingly similar ways that we approach our health and wealth.
  • How healthcare spending by age-range has changed.
  • Important physical metrics to track as you age.
  • How to give yourself a fiscal physical.
  • What 5 financial habits you need to be fiscally fit.
  • How to create a protective financial shield around your family in the case of an emergency (this is a must!).

  • Which hormones cause you to feel hungry or feel satisfied.
  • Why simply trying to stop a bad habit is a bad idea.
  • How many of life's greatest stressors are financial.

You’ve seen the headlines… Ads telling you to just “Eat these 5 fat burning foods” and you’ll be able to achieve miraculous things. You’ll drop 10 pounds in two weeks, lose several inches off your waist, and even get your own reality show on VH1. Ok, I added the last one in, but you get the picture.

If eating certain fat-burning foods could cure our body fat problems, then why are we not seeing an epidemic of fit people flooding the streets? If there were fat-burning foods that really did as advertised, they would be in such high demand that people would stand in lines around the block just like they do when the new iPhones come out (but this time it’ll be called “The iPhat”).

The reality is, fat-burning foods are a bit of a misnomer. Food (the good, the bad, and the ugly) doesn’t make you burn or store less fat based on the food alone. There are many complex things going on behind the scenes that only a few people can can give us the real skinny on. One of those people is Dr. Jade Teta. Just click play, listen in, and enjoy!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Important tools to help injury proof your body.
  • Why it's easy to overly focus on exercise and not so much on nutrition.

People, places, things, and ideas…

This doesn’t just describe what a noun is… this also describes what your destiny will be.

These are the things that make up your environment at any given time. And these are the things that inherently influence your thoughts, feelings, and actions. If you want to adjust the thoughts you carry, the feelings you experience, or the actions you take, you must meticulously look to your environment.

I love the quote that says, “You are a product of your environment, surround yourself with the best!” This statement affirms the fact that we are deeply influenced by our environment, but it also attests that we can change it.

If you’ve decided that you want to have, be, and do the very best things possible for you, then creating an environment that supports your greatness is of the utmost importance right now. In this powerful episode, you’re going to learn the actual science behind why you are a product of your environment. Plus, you’ll be equipped with several life-changing tools and insights to help you build the life that you truly deserve, and put more health, happiness, and success on automatic in your life. Let’s do this!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why it's so important to invest in yourself.
  • What the observer effect is and how our thoughts and consciousness literally create our world.
  • What the phantom DNA experiment can teach us.
  • How big our electromagnetic reach is.
  • Why we have a tendency to replicate what we see in our environment.
  • What happens in your brain when you’re in a conversation with people.
  • Why letting go is a critical part of growth.
  • The role that teachers and mentors play in shaping our reality.
  • Why changing environments doesn’t automatically change you.
  • The real reason people ask others for advice (this is a truth bomb!).
  • Why we need to relinquish our inner know-it-all.
  • Subconscious reasons why we don’t execute on insights and tips we receive.
  • The most effective way to help the people you care about change.
  • How the our behavior is influenced when we know others are watching us.
  • Why it’s important to know yourself (and plan accordingly!).

The next Watergate… the next Covfefe… the next New World Order is… coconut oil?

It’s remarkable how foods go in and out of fashion. A similar thing has happened with eggs. For centuries folks were eating whole eggs because, well, that’s how they come. Then saturated fat and cholesterol were villainized, and the egg yolks got the boot. Suddenly we were forced to endure the not-quite-right taste of egg white omelets. Then, years later, whole eggs are vindicated, and they are back on the menu again. Come to find out, cholesterol is an important part of building all of your sex hormones. It’s an important carrier molecule to ship critical nutrients from one place to another in your body. Plus, it helps the neurons in your brain to function properly and do things like form memories. So, yeah, it’s kind of important. Unless you don’t want to remember what you just read.

The reality is, it’s not cholesterol, but the oxidation of cholesterol that is the culprit behind increased risk of health problems. This study published in Biological Research is just one of the many sources that have been clear on this for years. The better question is, “How do we reduce the oxidation of the cholesterol and healthy, delicate fats in the eggs?”, not “How do we get rid of eggs?”. But, hey, the chicken crossed the road for lesser reasons, right?

One quick tip here is to simply not cook the yolk… have your eggs sunny side up or poached. If that’s not your cup of eggnog, you can opt for adding some potent antioxidants in along with your meal. As the study cites, antioxidants like rosemary oleoresin extract and the flavonoid quercetin efficiently inhibit the thermal-induced oxidation of cholesterol. Even something as simple as mixing the potent antioxidant/anti-inflammatory powerhouse turmeric in with your scrambled eggs can be helpful in preventing the oxidation bi-products from cooking. So, this simple example shows us something important that we need to carry with us always: It’s not just the food itself, it’s also how you use it.

After all is said and done, eggs go in and out of the secret spy, not-to-be-trusted list… and the overwhelmed public is tossed in a pool of conflicting information with no floaties, and no experience swimming through the actual clinical research.

But, this isn’t like the 1960s and 1970s where you had to just rely on the “experts” who look at the research and then tell you what to do. Today we have this interesting thing on our phones called the internet where you can go and look at the actual studies too. Information is not reserved for the few anymore, it’s available for everyone who’s interested in learning the whole story.

That brings us to the American Heart Association’s recent coconut-scented backslap. The internet was abuzz with news that coconut oil is not only unhealthy, but it was never healthy to begin with. Well, at least that’s what the hot, clickbait headline said. Everybody loves a good controversy, but at the end of the day we want the facts to speak for themselves.

On learning the whole story, you find out some pretty sketchy things about the AHA, who happens to be sponsored by pharmaceutical companies like Merck, Eli Lilly, and Pfizer. I bring this up because drugs and today’s conventional diet are salsa dancing together, and it gets real hot and steamy between the two.

Obviously, and I mean obviously, the drug company’s goals are not to sell less drugs. They have to have sick people around who are uneducated about what creates wellness. It’s easy to just trust in the foods stamped with the AHA’s approval. The problem is that the AHA puts their heart-healthy stamp on foods like Honey Nut Cheerios and even Subway sandwiches. Yep, not kidding. Not that long ago, the almighty American Heart Association endorsed Subway’s sandwiches even though their bread contained toxic compounds like Azodicarbonamide, and despite the fact that this chemical is banned in several other countries. The World Health Organization has confirmed that it’s linked it to chronic respiratory issues and allergies. Other studies have found it to be a carcinogen, and the U.K. Health And Safety Executive has recognized azodicarbonamide to be a contributing factor to asthma, specifically. Heart healthy Subway used it as a bleaching agent and dough conditioner, which allowed them to produce bread faster and cheaper. Where else can you find your neighborhood friendly azodicarbonamide? Oh, it’s pretty cool… it’s used to make yoga mats and rubber for shoes. You know, just typical things we love to eat (said no one ever… accept maybe Oscar the Grouch).

This doesn’t even bring in the antibiotics used in their food sourcing, the high glycemic nature of the breads, and all other manner of things that definitely are not heart healthy. The stamp of the AHA lands on many addictive, low quality foods that are known to contribute to disease. And with sick people, you get to sell more drugs. Big Pharma and the unethical organizations like the AHA win, but the public’s health loses.

All of this sounds a little bit fishy, because it is. In fact, it’s full-on Little Mermaid fishy because the AHA also has members of the U.S. Canola Association on its nutrition advisory panel. Do you think they’re NOT going to recommend that you consume canola oil? With conventional canola oil you’re getting a frequently genetically modified rapeseed that’s proven to contribute to serious health problems. A study published in the journal Lipids found that rats bred to have high blood pressure died faster when fed canola oil as their source of fat. Maybe that would have made a better headline… but instead the AHA chose to go after a food that’s been around for centuries (whereas as the canola oil we are using today was basically invented in the 1970’s).

In the article bashing coconut oil that made its rounds on the internet, they are admittedly using old, flawed studies. And these studies are mostly focusing on saturated fat, and not coconut oil itself. And this is important… because all saturated fat is not the same! Plus, they essentially ignore more updated research that completely demolishes this silly fight against coconut oil. But hey, when you mess with the bull, you get the horns.

I actually went into the studio and recorded this episode on coconut oil just about a week before this big news story hit the interwebs. I had no idea the AHA and related entities had this up their sleeves, I just felt compelled to share this information so that we can all live healthier, happier, better informed lives.

I feel that this episode will clear up a lot of questions and help you to gain some clarity over the misinformation that’s out there. And remember this like you remember the lyrics from your favorite boy band song: Just because it’s on the internet, does not mean that it’s true. And if you want to dive in further on the real health benefits of fats, specifically saturated fat, and where all of this diet drama began a few decades ago, then be sure to head over and check out my conversations with Dr. Mark Hyman, Dr. Cate Shanahan and Dr. Joseph Mercola after you enjoy the coconut pants off this episode. Let’s go!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • The mysterious origins of the coconut tree.
  • How coconut oil is actually made.
  • Which health damaging practices some conventional coconut oil makers use during processing.

When the going gets tough, the tough take a nap. That’s how it goes, right?

More and more today, napping is being considered acceptable by societal standards. There was a time when being caught “sleeping on the job” was frowned upon. Now, today, innovative companies like Google actually encourage their employees to nap if they feel the desire to. The results?...

Higher employee work output, higher levels of job satisfaction, and lower levels of stress. Can a good nap do all of that? Well, maybe.

One thing for certain is that simply having the ability to catch a few z’s during the day is comforting. Life happens, and even the tough get sleepy. But, as you’ll discover in this episode, you don’t want to let the smooth nap fool you.

There is a lot more to napping than meets the eye. Also, there is a growing amount of national sleep deficit that we are currently trying to find a way to pay off. The need for a nap might just be a symptom of a bigger issue… and all of that we’ll be rolling the covers back on today.

Plus, no one knows the seduction of a good nap like the folks who have small children. In this episode we’re going to provide some crucial insights to help parents (and their kids) to sleep better at night. Let’s do this!

There are many paths to our fitness goals. Some will get you there faster than others. And some will get you there so overly yolked that you look like crossfitting, keto eating Hulk Hogan.

Having 24 inch pythons like Hulk Hogan probably isn’t the goal for everyone. But getting to our body composition and fitness goals injury-free is. We’ve become strangely trapped in our linear movements in exercise today. Press with both arms in one direction with equal weight (i.e. bench press), squat up and down with both legs with equal weight (i.e. barbell squats), pull yourself straight up with total symmetry (i.e. strict pull ups), and these are the basics of our exercise programs today.

Don’t get me wrong, those movements are all valuable and popular for a reason. But, we may have gotten so set in those movements that they may have put us at a disadvantage when it comes to moving in the real world.

In reality… in life, and in competition, very rarely are you facing resistance that’s perfectly balanced on both sides of your body. That said, a healthy, almost necessary adjunct to training for life is to have unconventional resistance, unbalanced stressors that our body’s have to adapt to, and tools that make it easier (and safer) than that nutty buddy who has the picture of himself doing barbell squats while standing on top a swiss ball on social media.

For unconventional training, there’s one person who jumps right in my mind. He’s the man behind one of the biggest brands in the world in natural nutrition and unconventional training. He didn’t just create a company, he created a movement. And this movement has athletes the likes of All-Pro safety Earl Thomas from the Seattle Seahawks, UFC champion Tyron Woodley, and hundreds of thousands of everyday people from all around the world getting Onnit and transforming their bodies and their lives. Aubrey Marcus is in the house and he’s dropping some serious knowledge bombs! Click play, focus in, and enjoy!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • What growing up around athletes can instill in a child’s mindset.
  • Why having a coach that makes you feel bad can be counterproductive.
  • How to find more balance in helping our kids to decide their path in life.
  • What unconventional training means.
  • Why today’s typical training methods do not mimic reality.
  • How unconventional exercises can help to injury-proof your body.
  • Where the kettlebell originated and what its best applications are.
  • What some of the biggest mistakes with the kettlebell swing are.
  • Why steel clubs and steel maces were developed for warriors.
  • The #1 exercise someone with muscle imbalances from their sport (like swinging a baseball bat or golf club from the same side for years) needs to be doing.
  • Why battle rope exercises meet a need that no other conventional HIIT method can deliver.
  • Why battle ropes are great tools for people who are just beginning to get in shape and for experienced exercisers as well.
  • What it means to become physically literate.
  • What some of the greatest athletes on the planet carry in their mindset (this is valuable!).
  • How Aubrey was able to bypass “parasitic capitalism” and create a real movement.
  • What rigorous, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies were able to reveal about the Alpha Brain supplement.
  • The truth about caffeine and why it’s not an ideal long-term solution for focus and energy.
  • Why feeling that you’re not enough is one of the biggest hindrances of success.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” That’s how the timeless classic from Charles Dickens A Tale of Two Cities begins... and it couldn’t be any more accurate today.

Right now we have instant information at our fingertips. The answers to almost any question you can ask (including important questions like “Why do they keep remaking Spider-man?”) are just seconds away. We have an abundance of food for billions of people (I have some issues with this, but let me not digress). We have the ability to travel anywhere on the planet within hours. We have safer communities, more wealth, more access to education, and the ability to bypass conventional gatekeepers and become a shining success through the power of social media. Sounds like a pretty cool world, right? Well, don’t sign up for this field trip quite yet.

At the same time today, we have higher rates of disease and poor health than at any other time in documented human history. We have cyberbullying and endless criticism if you do decide to “put yourself out there” and engage with the world online. We have so many nuclear weapons that we can destroy our own planet a hundred times over, we have covfefe, we have destruction of our natural resources, and, most noticeably by all of us, we have lives that are filled to the brim with things to do. We have tasks to accomplish a mile long, and not enough minutes in the day to make much of a dent in it. So, my question to you is: How do we actually thrive in all of this?

Figuring this out would be like figuring out why anyone would ever travel anywhere with Tom Hanks (he’s been stranded on an island, hijacked at sea, and crashed, not one, but two airplanes.) Yet, there are incredible people walking around today who have uncovered a thing or two about what to do when you’re living in the busiest time of human existence... when you have access to so much opportunity, yet, you have so much distraction that it can seriously paralyze you.

One of those people who has uncovered some mind-blowing secrets to success today is Carrie Wilkerson. She’s one of the world’s top speakers, a bestselling author, a wife, a mother of four, and proof that not all superheroes wear capes. She has created several successful businesses and helped countless others to do the same. Oh, and did I mention that she found time to lose 140 pounds of excess weight along the way?!

Seriously, it sounds like her life is made up, but it’s actually as real as it can get. She faces the same daily challenges and decisions as all of us. She’s been through trials and tribulations that would make The Macho Man Randy Savage curl up in a corner and weep big, muscular tears. Learning from her is like a getting masterclass on how to overcome your excuses and blast-through any obstacles that stand in your way. I’m beyond excited to share her with you today. So, click play, listen in, and let the best of times begin!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Which food is actually clinically proven to increase antioxidants levels in your body.
  • Why our mission in life can often start out as an accident.
  • Why carrying excess weight is often a symptom of other things we’re dealing with.
  • What ultimately enabled Carrie to lose 145 pounds (so amazing!).
  • Why honesty and responsibility are huge factors in transforming our health.
  • Three critical keys to improve the areas of your life that matter most.
  • How tracking and course-correcting play an important role in achieving long-term results.
  • The #1 thing we need to accomplish our goals with our increasingly busy lifestyles.
  • Why being resourceful can be life-changing for you if you don’t have the resources.
  • Some of the best ways to indulge in your favorite media (without putting you behind the ball on your goals).
  • Why self-awareness is the most overlooked secret to success.
  • Why gaining awareness starts with having less awareness of what others are doing.

Pretty please with sugar on top.

Who could resist a request like that? Sugar does, indeed, make everything sweeter. Whether it’s a cake, a cup of coffee, or a deal brokered by a 5-year old, when sugar is added to the mix, things can become irresistible.

I’ve loved sugar as far back as I can remember. It’s been a staple in our lives… even when we didn’t have much money or food, we had sugar on the shelf. I can think back on the times that my younger siblings and I made butter and sugar sandwiches when the refrigerator was next to empty. Sugar was there for us, making life sweeter even then. So, how did things go so terribly wrong?

To say that I was addicted to sugar would be an understatement. I easily ate over 100 pounds of sugar each year through the foods and beverages I consumed. You might think that a number like that is outlandish, or even unusual, but today it’s actually the norm. Our society puts so much sugar into our metaphorical gas tanks each year that you’d be hard-pressed to figure out how any of us are still driving around. But, the truth is, our bodies/vehicles we're moving around in have made some drastic changes since sugar arrived on the scene. Rates of obesity and diseases related to sugar consumption are at an all-time high. And sugar, as sweet as it is, has poured its way into so many parts of our culture that you’d be hard-pressed to go anywhere and not find it. It’s always there, hidden in plain sight. But today you’re going to get your X-ray sugar glasses.

We’re about to go on a journey back to where this all began. To understand where we are, it’s important to look back at the sweet trail that sugar has left us. Today we’re going to uncover sugar’s humble beginnings, and how, ultimately, it was able to rise to power. I hope you’ve got a sweet tooth for learning and fun, because where we’re going, no podcast has gone before. So, buckle up, focus in, and travel with us into the History of Sugar!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • What medium chain triglycerides are and the various effects they have on your body.
  • When sugar originally entered the human diet.
  • What sweet foods signal to our system to do.
  • Why having more body fat was once considered an advantage.
  • The surprising effects that whole sugar cane has on your teeth.
  • Where the first mass refinery of sugar took place.
  • How sugar was originally used as a medicine.
  • Why sugar was once considered a luxury item.
  • How slavery and ethnic diversification are heavily tied to sugar production.
  • How sugar is actually created from sugar cane.
  • The interesting history that sugar has with the U.S. stock market.
  • How science has proven that sugar is more addictive than cocaine.
  • Why it’s extremely difficult to villainize sugar (hint: it’s because of love!).
  • The deep ties that sugar has to celebrities and entertainment.
  • The origins of the candy bar.
  • How beverages have become preferred delivery systems for sugar.
  • Why sugar has a huge impact on sexual dysfunction today.
  • The little known ways that sugar and violence are connected.
  • How much sugar people consume today versus a few centuries ago (this will shock you!).
  • How sugar actually ends up as fat on your body.
  • Some of the most devastating illnesses related to sugar consumption.
  • How high fructose corn syrup impacts your body differently than table sugar.
  • Valuable tips to help you move past a bad relationship with sugar.

What if every child with ADHD is actually gifted? As a society, we’ve been struggling to support our kids who have ADHD. And, as it turns out, many of these children are not just hyper-active, but also hyper-intelligent.

The great tragedy today is that many of these kid’s amazing gifts are, unfortunately, overlooked or suppressed. ADHD is typically a blanket diagnosis that covers hundreds of different variations in symptoms and experiences. Yet, millions of children are lumped together and given a cookie-cutter treatment, and the results of have been less than impressive.

Some rarely discussed side effects of conventional treatment and/or neglect of ADHD are greater levels of depression and anxiety, higher incidences of drug abuse, and higher rates of suicide. Simply giving a child a drug to help them be more focused in grade school may seem appropriate in the short-term, but neglecting the underlying cause of the ADHD could have devastating consequences in the long-term.

ADHD simply does not “wear off” when a child reaches adulthood. More than half of the kids diagnosed with ADHD transition into what’s known as adult ADHD. The symptoms of adult ADHD are far reaching and more common than you can imagine. This could manifest as struggles in health, work, finances, and relationships. That’s why I could think of no one better than Dr. John Gray to help us understand this better and truly help us to find some solutions.

Dr. Gray is the author of one of the best selling books of all time, Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, and several other life-changing books in that guild. John has become wildly successful, and his books have become household names. John has also battled ADHD most of his life, and his story of discovery and reversing his condition will truly blow your mind.

John’s success inspired him to research, teach and write about valuable treatments for ADHD and adult ADHD, without the potentially harmful side effects seen with conventional medicine. This episode can literally save lives. It can also help some of our most gifted souls to live healthy, happy, meaningful lives. I’m excited and honored to share this with you today. So, just click play, take good notes, and enjoy!

With the rapidly growing rates of Hashimoto’s disease, either you or someone you know will be stricken by this disease if we don’t do something about it.

Hashimoto’s is hot right now. Not in a Zoolander hitting the runway kind of hot, but a full-fledged epidemic featuring the fastest spreading autoimmune disease in the nation.

Dr. Izabella Wentz had Hashimoto’s for years and didn’t know it. It just about wrecked her entire life (as you’ll learn about today), but it was also an amazing gift in disguise.

After years of struggle, she was able to successfully put the disease into full remission. Now she’s on a mission to share the life-changing strategies she discovered with the millions of people battling Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. The rub is that many of the people with Hashimoto’s don’t know that they have it. It could be expressed in chronic fatigue, stubborn body fat, constipation, hair loss, memory lapses, or many other symptoms. It’s important to know the signs, but it’s also important to know the right testing. We’ll definitely be covering both of those today.

So, why is Hashimoto’s so prevalent in our world right now? What makes our thyroid so special? Why is conventional medicine failing in treating this disease? You’ll discover that and so much more in this very important and timely interview today. Just click play, take good note, and enjoy!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How growing up in a doctor’s office shaped Dr. Wentz’s passion for medicine.
  • The surprising (but not uncommon) way that Dr. Wentz was treated by her own doctors.
  • What the term “incurable” really means.
  • How conventional medicine treats Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (and what is missing).
  • How prevalent Hashimoto’s actually is today (this will shock you!).
  • What some common (and overlooked) symptoms of Hashimoto’s can be.
  • How the immune system functions like a private investigator.
  • The 3 factors that must be present for Hashimoto’s to occur.
  • How gut cells and thyroid cells are connected.
  • Why some people can eat gluten and live without any negative symptoms.
  • Which environmental triggers can disrupt thyroid function.
  • How fluoride suppresses thyroid function (you need to know about this!).
  • Why your liver plays a huge role in thyroid health.
  • What adaptive physiology is and how diseases work (in a weird way) to help us.
  • How stress contributes to thyroid disease.
  • Which essential nutrients are needed for healthy thyroid function.
  • What the correct thyroid tests are to identify Hashimoto’s.

It may sound strange to hear, but cancer actually has a purpose in the human body. And there are many theories on the origins and role of cancer. Theories related to fungus overgrowth, to oxygenation, to immune function, and many others. Researchers have been furiously searching to find the cure for cancer for decades, but not coming to grips with what cancer really is and where it all begins.

Understanding the role that cancer actually plays, and what the body is doing when it sparks the life of cancer cells is vital to overcoming this epidemic. Every choice we make in life instantly has two outcomes.

Every time you say yes to something, you are inherently saying no to something else. And every time you say no to something, you are automatically saying yes to something else.

For example, when you say yes to eating healthy food, then you are saying no to eating deep-fried Twinkies by default. That cream-stuffed heart attack may be attractive, but one yes decision accomplishes both in one fell swoop.

That example is for a positive outcome. But in a negative context, saying yes to a job that you can’t stand (and not opening yourself up to another one), is saying no to a career that you could really enjoy, automatically. You can have anything, but you can’t have everything. And your no’s and yes’s are the priceless currency of your life.

According to bestselling author James Altucher, The Power of No is one of the least utilized keys to a healthy and happy life. When you say “NO” to the things that you don’t want, then you actually make room for the things in life that you do want. Often times we can’t take advantage of (or even recognize) the biggest opportunities in our lives if we’re busy doing things that we don’t want to do.

On a level of health and wellness, that soul-sucking behavior of saying yes (even when you know good and well you shouldn’t be doing it) increases stress hormones, reduces activity in the parts of your brain associated with creativity and happiness, and even increases behaviors like emotional eating (because your biology is trying to find some relief from the jam you’ve gotten yourself into).

It’s true that there are rites of passage in life, and there are times when you have to suck-it-up and do things that you might not want to do (like going to the DMV to get your tags renewed - I think I would rather be forced to cook bacon in the nude. And bacon grease can be so unfriendly!). But those short-term choices need to be leading you to long-term rewards you want. The problem is that a lot of times we say yes to things, we get stuck saying yes, and never devise ourselves an exit plan.

The solution is to become more aware of the power of no, and to use it consciously to move your life forward. You’ve got a finite time here to enjoy life and make the most of yourself, and that’s why I’m so excited to share today’s episode with you!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How James amassed a fortune building websites for iconic entertainment companies.
  • How James lost all of his fortune (and more) because of what he calls “the disease”.
  • Why it’s a big mistake to think that you’re ever done (or that you’ve “made it”).
  • Why money is a side effect of something more important.
  • How self-honesty can be the key to having the health, happiness, and life you want.
  • Why you need to exercise your idea muscle daily.
  • What Twinkies have to do with finding your purpose.
  • How the power of “NO” can revolutionize your life.
  • Why rejection is a normal, valuable part of life.
  • Why playing is such an important part of success.
  • How to become an idea machine.
  • Why you need to love yourself like your life depends on it.
  • Why putting a priority on your own health and happiness is one of the most unselfish things you can ever do.

I thought that it was too late for me. I thought that too much time had passed…

For two and a half years I was in pain as my spine was essentially falling apart. Two herniated discs, advanced degeneration, and a disease prognosis that gave me no hope of recovery.

Leading up to the day that I finally decided to make some changes and do something about it, this profound sense of hopelessness came over me. I thought to myself, “Too much time has passed. If my body was going to get any better it would’ve happened by now.” I was giving myself an out before I even started. But, fortunately I woke up and gave my body a chance.

The funny thing was actually witnessing how quickly my body turned things around. My body was wanting all along to restore vibrant health, but I was fighting against it. All I needed to do was give my body the right conditions to do what it already knows how to do. Our bodies are designed to heal. Our bodies are designed to thrive.

But what about the case of an autoimmune disease? Isn’t your body fighting against you this time? Well, not exactly. In the case of many autoimmune diseases, your body thinks that it’s actually helping you by attacking your tissues. It’s friendly fire. But, why in the world would it do that?

That’s what Dr. Terry Wahls was struggling to understand when multiple sclerosis left her wheelchair-bound and slowly watching her life slip away. Years went by for her as well. But, fortunately, she didn’t give up. And her story, which you’re going to hear today, is absolutely incredible!

Dr. Wahls' protocol has enabled tens of thousands of people all over the world to put their MS or autoimmune diseases into remission. The principles in how she was able to make this happen are bundled up for you right here, and I’m beyond grateful to be able to share it with you.

As you may know from my story, I had a complete reversal of the spinal and bone disease, and better health than I could’ve ever imagined. But there are countless stories of transformations like this, and Dr. Wahls' is one of them. I want you to know that no matter how long you’ve been struggling in your health, there is always an opportunity for you to turn things around. Hopefully Dr. Wahls' protocol will provide you with some tools and inspiration to help make it happen. Enjoy!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How magnesium deeply impacts sleep quality.
  • How multiple sclerosis (MS) invaded Dr. Wahls’ life leaving her debilitated and struggling with chronic pain.
  • What enabled Dr. Wahls to go from wheelchair bound to full, energetic function (she can now go on an 18 mile bike ride just for fun!)
  • How to enable hope to reemerge in your life.
  • What the underlying cause behind MS is.
  • The severe problems with the way conventional medicine treats MS.
  • What roles genetics plays in developing MS.
  • How myelin is related to MS and the important function it plays for overall health.
  • How to improve the performance of myelin through exercise.
  • Which essential nutrients are crucial for creating and supporting myelin.
  • How cholesterol lowering drugs can contribute to complications with MS.
  • Which key hormones your body creates through the modification of cholesterol.
  • How sun exposure is intimately related to MS.
  • The shocking number of genes that are influenced by vitamin D.
  • Why sunscreen might be more problematic than beneficial.
  • The incredible way that our microbiome and gut health influence MS.
  • Why Dr. Wahls had affordability and simplicity in mind when she created her cookbook.
  • How stress and unresolved conflict can wreak havoc on your health.
  • Whether or not The Wahls Protocol can be effective in treating other autoimmune diseases besides MS.

Are your food choices really determined by you?

In a way, yes. You are the one that has full responsibility of driving that body of yours around. But in another way, no. If you look a little closer, you’ll see that the roads you have been driving on were set up in a way that makes your decisions less conscious… robotic even. Your vehicle (that amazing body of yours) has been wired to eat in a certain way. And you’re probably not the one who did the initial wiring.

If this brings to mind the scene in The Matrix where Neo wakes up all covered in goo, and hooked to wires that have been draining his life-force, then good. That was such an awesome scene. I’m not talking about that kind of wiring though.

I’m talking about the internal wiring. How your brain and nervous system are wired up to automate behaviors. Believe it or not, you don’t come here with a lot of advanced programming set up. Sure, you have all the basics: eating, crying, laughing, pooping (oh, how many diapers I’ve changed!). You don’t have to work very hard to do those things. But, and this is a big but, what you are fed, what you cry about, what you laugh about, and what you are pooping out can be very different depending on how you’re programmed. And that’s where your wake up call is going to begin.

Recently we are realizing far more that it’s not so much that diseases are inherited. Sure, we can carry genes for an array of chronic illnesses from our parents. However, research is finding that over 80% percent of those genes are largely under our control (specifically under the control of our lifestyle choices). So, again, it’s not so much that diseases are inherited, but our family’s cookbooks and eating habits are inherited. And that’s how we initially get wired to eat.

Today New York Times bestselling author (and modern day superhero) Robb Wolf is on the show to talk about some of this internal wiring. Most importantly, he’s got the tools, insights, and strategies to reprogram yourself to make the food decisions that really serve you. Plus, he’s going to show you how the variety and enjoyment from food in your life can be personalized. This is vital stuff, so click play, climb out of the mental goo, and enjoy!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Which unique foods are proven to enhance stem cell genesis.
  • What enabled Robb to go from chronic illness (and potential removal of part of his intestines) to remarkable health and fitness in just a matter of months.
  • How Robb opened up the very first Crossfit Affiliate gym in the country.
  • Why your environment matters just as much as your diet.
  • The chronic family health issue that inspired Robb to test out a Paleo-type diet.
  • What neuroregulation of appetite is.
  • Why some people are better off eating a cookie than a banana (wait, what?).
  • How professional eating competitors hack their appetite.
  • What vanishing calories and hyperpalatable foods are.
  • Why gut bacteria needs to be considered with our food choices.
  • What personalized nutrition is and why it’s important.
  • How to intelligently alter meals so that everyone in the family eats what’s best for them.
  • Surprising insights about kid’s eating habits for parents who want their kids to eat healthy.
  • The vast benefits and potential pitfalls with a ketogenic diet.
  • How community and relationships play a powerful role in health and wellness.

I remember playing the hot potato game when I was a little kid. The music plays, and the “hot potato” (usually a tiny beanbag) is passed around by kids in a circle. When the music stops, if you’re the unlucky one holding the potato, you’re out! The potato makes you lose.

Well, maybe that silly (and fun!) kids game was onto something. According to our guest today, if you get caught with the potato in your hand (specifically a sweet potato) then you will lose yet again… but this time the loss is in body fat.

Michael Morelli is an absolute superstar in the fitness space. With over 4 million followers and fans on his social media platforms, he’s one of the strongest voices in the health movement today. This guy is super fit, and he’s helped thousands of other people get super fit. One of the tools of the trade: The Sweet Potato Diet. It’s a real food, intelligent carb-cycling approach that just flat-out gets results.

As you’ll discover today, carb-cycling is a valuable tool that’s heavily underutilized because major media hasn’t been talking enough about it. In truth, it’s a way of eating that we’ve evolved with in many ways. Naturally we’d have periods of overfeeding, underfeeding, and basic maintenance. It would be a shift in calories and in food type. Our ratios of macronutrients (the carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) would shift much more frequently than the cookie-cutter, same-old-same-old way we tend to eat today. To tap into a way of eating that encourages a shift in your metabolism, and a way that your genes actually expect you to eat, just click play and find out the benefits of The Sweet Potato Diet!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How fitness superstar Michael Morelli hit rock bottom and ended up in his mom’s basement.
  • What carb cycling is and why it’s valuable to know about.
  • Why low-carb or ketogenic diets can be challenging for some people.
  • The impact that small, healthy amounts of sweet potatoes can have on blood sugar long-term.
  • Which culture the highest percentage of people 100+ years old who use sweet potato as a staple in their diet.
  • Whether or not it’s a good idea for most people to count their calories.
  • Which concentrated sweet potato nutrient is correlated with a longer lifespan.
  • Whether or not you’re eating a yam or a true sweet potato.
  • Why food choices for most people are not logical.
  • How the sweet potato can radically upgrade most of your favorite indulgences.
  • Why strict diets tend to be in opposition of human psychology.
  • How to carb cycle in combination with exercise during your week.
  • What your body will do to provide glucose for your brain if glucose is too low.
  • Important mental shifts you need to make when working to change your body.

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard a professor, a trainer, a coach, a well-meaning gym buddy, a special news report, or a random passerby say that you need to do more cardio to burn more fat, I’d have Scrooge McDuck level cash in my account.

If so many people say it, then it must be true, right? Scratch that… if so many intelligent and well-meaning people say it, then it must be true, right?

And therein lies one of the problems…

If you take really smart, well-meaning people and teach them the wrong thing, they can become world-class at doing the wrong thing. So good at doing the wrong thing, in fact, that they create compelling arguments as to why they should continue doing it (even if it’s not working).

When it comes to doing hours of cardio each week, and still not seeing the weight budge, we can justify and say… “Ah, I just need to sneak another hour in each week.” Or “I just need to cut back on the calories even more.” Or “I’m just not good at this.” Or, and this is the worst, “I’m obviously not trying hard enough.”

So, we try to beat our metabolism into submission. Or, we develop a condition of learned helplessness… where we believe that no matter how much dieting and cardio we do, we’ll never be able to change.

But, what if all along it was the tactics, and not the ability of the person, that was not working to begin with? Cardio being the ideal form of exercise for fat loss was something that was largely just assumed and not proven. Sort of like when people believed that the earth was flat (this was even taught in universities!), until the assumption was finally disproved.

That busted myth took centuries to happen. The Great Cardio Myth is getting busted in just one episode of The Model Health Show.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why cardio machines are lying to us.
  • The impact that conventional cardio exercise has on appetite.
  • How basic dieting compares to doing hours of cardio.
  • Where the idea of doing more aerobic exercise for better health originated.
  • How low-fat, high-carb diets got advocated along with conventional cardio.
  • Whether or not you can outrun a pizza.
  • The truth about how overuse injuries occur.
  • Why the treadmill creates abnormal walking and running movements.
  • The shocking influence that conventional cardio can have on heart health.
  • How high intensity interval training compares to strict cardio in clinical trials.
  • What to do if you’ve only got 3 days a week (and less than 30 minutes) to exercise each week.
  • How to train if you want to build muscle mass and if you DON’T want to build muscle mass.
  • The real reason so many people gravitate towards cardio for exercise (truth bomb!).

Working as a clinician for many years, one of the most common questions I would get is, “What can I take for more energy?”.

It was always a tough question because I knew I’d just be treating a symptom by giving them energizing natural supplements like maca, cordyceps, and ginseng. Sure, it’s better that they didn’t ask a drug dealer the same question. In the immortal words of Rick James, “Cocaine is a helluva drug…” But, I didn’t want them to see me like a natural pill-pusher, and get them hooked on something just to get them by, either. So, I dedicated myself to helping them get to the root of their energy problems. And today you’ll learn the very best of what I came up with.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How my struggle with chronic fatigue began.
  • A potent superherb that’s clinically proven to improve insulin sensitivity.
  • What going to the gym is compensating for.
  • How you’re able to literally charge up your cells like a battery.
  • The surprising amount of energy the human body can generate.
  • Simple strategies to get in more nutritious movement throughout the day.
  • Why you can still wake up exhausted after 7 to 8 hours of sleep.
  • What sleep architecture is.
  • How many total sleep cycles you need for optimal energy.
  • What happens in your brain during sleep.
  • The 2 major things that can disrupt your sleep cycles.
  • Key nutrient deficiencies that cause fatigue and sleep problems.
  • The #1 mineral that supports human energy production.
  • How dehydration impacts energy (and how much water you really need!).

Culture is a very interesting and versatile thing. Culture is like the invisible force that guides our beliefs, behaviors, and knowledge. Culture is what gives color to how you experience your life.

There are many shades and varieties of colors (you already know there are 50 Shades of Gray), and your culture, versus the culture of someone else, is a fundamental reason why two people can have a totally different experience from the same event.

Take seeing a new superhero movie, for example. You have been immersed in a culture that loves the ideas of superpowers. They believe human potential is limitless. They believe that good always wins in the end. While your friend, who you’ve unwittingly brought along to see the movie with you, has been immersed in a culture believes only in what they see. They value hard, cold facts and extreme rationality. They believe in love, but also that bad things happen no matter what, and it’s all about probability.

You think the movie is fantastic and inspiring. As a result, you get a rush of endorphins and positive “feel good” neurotransmitters and hormones. Your stress levels go down, and you are inspired for days after.

Your friend, on the other hand, thinks the movie is a waste of time and resources. They watched with pessimistic cultural views, and they were so busy pointing out what’s not realistic that they missed out on the magic of human creativity. As a result, your friend’s stress hormones elevate from irritation. Their blood sugar is low because of all the mental energy used to dissect the cinematic foolishness, and they leave feeling like they’ve just wasted three hours of their life that they can’t get back. Two totally different experiences from the same event. Neither of you is right or wrong. Just very different.

Now stretch this variance in perception into the realm of food, exercise, stress management, relationships, and, most importantly, what’s deeply ingrained in you about how long you’re going to live, and you’ll discover the real power that culture has over your life. The issue is that its power has been hiding in plain site, governing everything you do and how you experience the world. Today, thanks to the incomparable Dr. Mario Martinez, you’re going to learn how to come out of a cultural fog and embrace only the cultural influences that are serving you in becoming the greatest version of yourself.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How we can know what’s best for our health but still not do it.
  • What psychoneuroimmunology is.
  • How much genetics actually play into how long you’ll live healthfully.
  • What a culture is and how it affects the brain.
  • How feelings like shame impact inflammation and pain.
  • Why affirmations alone don’t work.
  • What causes people who elevate and “make it big” to come crashing back down.
  • How to move beyond pseudo-humbleness.
  • Why we need to learn about the causes of health.
  • The difference between a ritual and a routine (this is important!).
  • The surprising way that pleasure can affect your immune system.
  • How to differentiate hedonistic pleasure and eudemonic pleasure.
  • How to be an outlier and not lose your health and happiness because of it.
  • Why old psychological programs can show up and sabotage your relationships.
  • Why speed of implementation is important.
  • How junk food can mean love for us.
  • Why giving something up can make you want it more.
  • The difference between having an illness and becoming an illness.

How often have you found yourself feeling stressed by time?

How about the feeling that you don’t have enough time to do the things you really want to do? And, if you’re like most us, just thinking about how little time you have makes you so exhausted that you just eat some dessert, watch tv, and waste even more time?

It’s crazy how time can do such a number on our psyches. But, today, we’ve got some major solutions to our society’s crazy time epidemic!

Time is not measured by clocks, it’s measured by moments. The more that we can take control of how we invest our time, the more we’re going to be present for the moments that really make life worth living. On the health side, time worry is actually a major cause of anxiety. So much futurecasting, and not feeling empowered to do the things we want, can lead to a subtle, or very strong, feeling of helplessness.

To help all of us become a better master of our days, I called in one of the top productivity and leadership experts in the world. His story is remarkable. Many people that have 1/10 of the responsibility that this man has are quaking in the boots trying to figure out how to make it. Not only is he making it, but he’s thriving, and helping people all over the world to do the same. He’s an incredible model for us all, so I’d like to introduce you to the incredible Michael Hyatt.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • The do’s and don’ts of melatonin supplementation.
  • The #1 reason most people aren’t exercising.
  • Why asking for permission is a waste of time.
  • The 2 biggest misconceptions when it comes to productivity.
  • What the “Circle of Being” is and why it’s important.
  • Why it’s important to exercise your “NO” muscle.
  • A powerful written response to help you devote time where it’s needed most.
  • Why a combined rest and work flow is valuable to your success.
  • The critical importance of hard boundaries.
  • What an activation trigger is.
  • How productivity technology can actually make us less productive.
  • How to instantly reframe your tasks to make them more appealing.
  • The importance of creating a positive work environment (and strategically avoiding disrupters).
  • Why it’s helpful to fill up other’s emotional gas tank.
  • Why a productivity mindset is more important than productivity techniques.

Sometimes I contemplate on just how fragile life is. Here we are, spinning around the sun in the middle of the universe with a billion delicate balances allowing us to be here.

When you stop and think about how grand everything is, it can be a little overwhelming. But, if you zoom in even closer… and even closer than that… and even closer than that… all the way down to the makeup of our cells, you see that life is also very powerful and resilient. And there are intelligent systems governing it all.

Life, and how long we live, is not an accident. Our cells can actually tell us how long we’re going to live. More specifically, they can tell us how long we’re going to live healthfully. I just overheard a gentleman at the gym, probably in his late 50’s, telling another seasoned fellow how he’s getting too old to do basic things he used to do. He was complaining about the inability to tend to his yard and to exercise normally. The man he was talking to simply replied, “It’s too bad, isn’t it?”

They have bought into the idea that it’s a sharp downhill slope now that their 50’s have shown up. All I could think about in that moment was The Telomere Effect.

To put it simply, your telomeres are a biological marker that can tell you how long you’re going to live with your health intact. Nobel Prize winning scientist Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn and superstar health psychologist Dr. Elissa Epel collaborated to write one of the most important books of our time. The Telomere Effect provides eye-opening study after study proving how this incredible biological marker can be shortened or extended based on our lifestyle choices, and even our beliefs.

Today you’re about to hear from Dr. Epel about just how powerful you are to ensure you live healthfully for the vast majority of your years. As grand as the universe is, some of the greatest power resides in your cells, and it resides in your ability to choose. To be healthy as you age, or not to be. That is the question! And today we’ve got your answer.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Which incredible compound has been found to protect your body from the effects of sleep deprivation.
  • What telomeres are and how they work.
  • Whether or not things like bullying and violence have an impact on your healthspan.
  • The difference between your healthspan and disease span.
  • How stressful events influence your cellular aging.
  • The crucial lifestyle factors that can protect your telomeres from shortening too fast.
  • The difference between a threat response and a challenge response.
  • What cognitive defusion is.
  • How to swiftly move past being overly self-critical.
  • What inflamm-aging is and how it impacts our lives.
  • Which key nutrients have been found to support telomere length.
  • How sleep minutes are like calories.
  • The amount of exercise needed to protect you from accelerated telomere shortening.

Conventional wisdom says that your body burns fat as a whole, and that you can’t “spot-eliminate” fat. Well, if conventional wisdom had a nose, it would be growing like Pinocchio’s right now. What does a good sandwich, an Oreo cookie, and a Hot Pocket all have in common? Well, even though I might not be sycked to eat any of those things, it’s the stuff in the middle that makes them what they are.

Without the fixings in the middle of the sandwich, you’d just be eating bread (true story, I’ve eaten many bread sandwiches in my lifetime), without the cream in the middle of the Oreo, you’d just have two dry black discs, and without the cheesy meaty center of the Hot Pocket, you’d just have a pocket.

So, what’s the point of this pro-diabetes food analogy? It’s to remind you that what happens in the middle counts. I’d argue to say that what happens in the middle is where all the action is. And that’s why today’s show is so important…

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t actually “get fit” when you’re working out. It’s the stuff that you do in between your workouts (aka in the middle) that makes all the difference in the world.

You see, exercise is known as a hormetic stressor. It’s something that puts a stressful load onto your body that can actually make your body stronger, if you allow/support your body to heal from it.

We can radically up-level our body’s healing process and come back better, faster by adding in a few recovery essentials. Today we have on health & fitness celebrity Drew Canole to share some of his best tips to help you recover faster and get the most out of your fitness program.

Many of these tools are simple, easy to implement, and proven to work. But they don’t work unless you work them! Plus, you’ll get the inside scoop on what Drew’s personal training programs looks like that keeps him in cover model shape year round. So, let’s get to it!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • The #1 way that we influence the people around us.
  • Why you may want to change how you label your cheat meals.
  • How your breathing habits influence your body’s ability to burn fat.
  • What interesting compound in broccoli can help you body detoxify more effectively.
  • Why it’s more difficult to gain weight when you eat real food.
  • Simple tips to help you speed up your recovery time.
  • How to radically increase muscle hypertrophy (King TUT is the key!).
  • What training program Drew used to put on size and strength in a short amount of time.
  • Why accountability is so valuable in accomplishing your fitness goals.
  • How to do pyramid drop-sets for faster results.
  • Why you need to immediately become a sleep ninja.

The term “superfood” has been used more and more loosely as the years have gone by. It’s sort of like when a really skinny guys who doesn’t workout has abs… and you’re like, “Nah, that doesn’t really count. Put your shirt back on and stop flexing.” Well, at least that’s what I would have told my 12-year old self...

Superfoods are not the run-of-the-mill foods that you see everyday. These are foods that have rare nutrients, or concentrations of nutrients, or a completeness of nutrients that are rarely seen in nature. Broccoli is like abs on Justin Bieber. Real superfoods (like you’re about to learn about today) are like abs on Arnold Schwarzenegger. They are totally in a different league (and no disrespect to broccoli!).

You’re about so get the inside scoop on foods that are clinically proven to destroy cancer cells, foods that can regenerate and heal your ligaments, tendons, and bones, and even foods that can upgrade your entire immune system. Enjoy, and make sure to share this with the people you care about!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Which powerful superfood has been used historically as a “famine food”.
  • What the surprising benefits of polysaccharides are.
  • What it means to be a COX-2 inhibitor.
  • The incredible impact that one (stinky) superfood has on lowering cholesterol.
  • Which superfood boasts 7x more vitamin C than oranges, 7x more potassium than bananas, 4x more calcium than milk.
  • A food that’s clinically proven to optimize blood sugar and prevent prediabetes and diabetes.
  • Where to find usable antioxidants that actually show up in your bloodstream.
  • A wonderful superfood that’s being used to help feed impoverished children.
  • Which superfood is also the best natural laxative.
  • The superfood that was prized by the ancient Egyptians and Alexander the Great.
  • What to use to rapidly heal burns and skin damage.
  • Which class of little known superfoods are responsible for creating most of the world’s oxygen supply.
  • A rare compound that can help support your stem cell production.
  • Which superfood contains every essential amino acid, every essential fatty acid, and every essential glyconutrient.
  • How this special superfood helps to “format” your immune system.
  • How inflammation is tied to weight gain, and which superfood can help with reducing it!

You’ve probably heard the statement, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” But if that’s the case, why do so many of us shy away from adversity? Why, when the chips are down, do we sometimes feel like we can’t move past the hard times?
Part of it is perception. It’s not what happens to us, but how you respond to what happens that tells the real tale of the results in our lives. How you perceive the challenge will be your experience of the challenge. You can see it as the ultimate thing that will take you down, or the greatest gift that’s going to push you to take your life to the next level.

The other part is readiness for the challenge. It might seem that we are ill-equipped at times to overcome our hardships. Yet, if we dive deep and keep moving forward, we’ll often find that the strength was in us all along.

You are not always going to be ready for a specific adversity, but you can train yourself mind, body, and spirit to be ready at all times for life’s toughest situations. That’s what today’s guest discovered, and now her story is inspiring hundreds of thousands of people around the globe.

My guest today is the one and only JJ Virgin. She’s a multiple time New York Times bestselling author, speaker, trainer, and all around superstar. Her book The Virgin Diet hit the market and spread like wildfire. She jumped from interview to interview around the country to promote the book and made her long-awaited dream come true. But, all the while she was dealing with the most challenging experience of her life.

It would take everything she had to make it through it, and JJ was ready and willing to step up to the plate. Today you’re going to learn how to ensure that you’re ready for life’s toughest challenges on the way to your dreams. You’re going to learn how to develop the mindset of a true champion, the Miracle Mindset, and set an unstoppable course towards making your own visions a reality.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How even the best universities are teaching people bad nutritional science.
  • Which “healthy” sugar is dangerous to your liver and gut lining.
  • Why fresh-pressed juices might make you fat.
  • The #1 disempowering belief that people carry in regards to their body and lifestyle.
  • The surprising family struggle JJ was going through during her first book launch.
  • What guiding principle JJ held when dealing with her son’s recovery.
  • How extreme self-care can be integral to overcoming adversity.
  • Why you need to focus on getting stronger instead of having things easier.
  • What it takes to develop the Miracle Mindset.
  • Why operating from a scarcity mindset can hurt you and others.

When we set out on a journey to get to a destination, we don’t always know what’s in store for us on the road (or if that road might take us somewhere totally unexpected). The important thing is that we embark on our journey, and, as the wise writer Paulo Coelho says, discover our own “personal legend”.

Every journey begins with taking the first step. When I took the first step to start this show, all I knew was that I wanted to help. I wanted to be a blessing in people’s lives. I want to, not just give them hope, but to give them how. And through all of these years and countless hours, I feel that we can confidently say we’ve helped make that a reality.

What I didn’t expect, however, is how much I would love this process, how much I would grow, and how many amazing friends would be brought into my life. But, learning has been of of the most valuable gifts to me. Part of teaching is being a lifetime student yourself. I’ve been able to embrace a childlike sense of wonder, and curiosity that has me asking powerful questions each day. One of those recent questions was, “How can I best celebrate this moment of our 200th show while providing a tremendous amount of value and inspiration for everyone at the same time?” That question led to this. I want to thank you for making me a part of your life, and for being on this journey with me. Please know that the best is yet to come, and join me in celebrating this special moment!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How the Law of Metabolic Compensation impacts our lives each day.
  • 4 ways you can shift your calories and exercise to change your metabolism.
  • What vanishing calories are.
  • The one thing you need to avoid when starting your day.
  • The #1 thing that determines your health, happiness, and success in life.
  • What the 6 human needs are (and how they impact you).
  • How our environment shapes our bodies.
  • The leading cause of sexual dysfunction in our world today.
  • What the most valuable foods and supplements for your immune system are.
  • Why pre- and post-workout nutrition actually matters.

One of my favorite statements of all-time was from Dr. Wayne Dyer when he said, “You don’t attract what you want. You attract what you are.”

Our relationships say a lot about us. They tell us our strengths and weaknesses. They reveal to us our capacity to grow and change. And, most importantly, they give us moment-to-moment feedback about where our life really is.

You see, nothing influences our health, happiness, and success in life more than our relationships. Your most intimate relationship has the greatest influence of all. Anyone who’s ever been in love before knows that love (or lack thereof) permeates itself into everything that you do. It’s the foremost place of inspiration, yet so many of us today put our relationships on the backburner (or worse, on autopilot).

I’m beyond excited to bring a true legend and gift of a human being on the show today to share his most valuable insights for having the relationship that you truly deserve. John Gray is walking, talking amazing. You’re about to find out exactly why is regarded as the #1 relationship expert of our time, and the ah-ha moments will be flowing left and right!

Many times it’s the small things that make a huge difference. And by putting more intention into your relationship (or creating one) you will experience an exponential growth of success in all areas of life. It’s nearly impossible not to! Enjoy this and make sure to share it with the people you love.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why you need to understand the distinction between different types of pain.
  • Which little known supplement can reduce hangover symptoms by up to 96%.
  • Whether or not it’s ideal to have water with your meals.
  • What inspired the most well-known relationship expert in the world to become interested in relationships (amazing story!).
  • Why it’s not a man’s job to make a woman happy (and what our job really is!).
  • How testosterone plays into the role of attraction.
  • The surprising reason why men need a “man cave”.
  • How digestion impacts happiness and well-being.
  • How healthy relationships help your immune system to be more resilient.
  • Why it’s valuable to have social interactions beyond your close relationship.
  • How handling stress inappropriately can convert a man’s testosterone into estrogen.
  • What causes us to revert back to behaviors we learned from our parents.
  • What causes relationships that were passionate in the beginning to fizzle away.
  • The greatest gift a woman could ever receive in a relationship.
  • What happens when women suppress their emotions.
  • Why a man’s tendency to want to fix things can backfire.
  • What superpower women have to make their man be stronger and more giving.
  • How to help ensure that your significant other supports you in your health & wellness endeavors.

One of the biggest reasons that people give for failing to exercise, to prepare great food for themselves, and to get adequate sleep is that they don’t have enough time.

It’s kind of funny because we all share the same 24-hour clock… and there are people with 3 kids, running their own business with multiple employees, writing books, touring the country speaking, recording their own podcast and frequently doing media interviews... that still have enough time to exercise, eat healthy, get great sleep and have a wonderful family life. I know it because I am that person. This is actually my life. If I was told it would be like this 10 years ago I probably would have thought you were crazy. But, step-by-step I’ve achieved greater levels of productivity, I’ve radically increased my energy and focus, and, more important than anything, I’ve become world-class at setting and accomplishing goals.

Trust me, I didn’t get here on my own. I’ve had incredible teachers along the way who’ve taught me the tools of the trade. One of the smartest things you can ever do in your life is to learn from people who’ve already accomplished what you want to accomplish. They know the way. They have the map. And you’d be surprised just how often they’d give it to you (or at least let you take a picture of it with your phone).

Today we have for you a true genius when it comes to mastering focusing, productivity, and getting things done. Use these tools to make sure that you are constructing the life that YOU love. You’ll be able to create ample time to workout, eat healthy, get great sleep, and do work that fulfills you. Plus, you’ll be able to better enjoy the process and not end up as a fried Twinkie stuck to the couch at the end of the day. This life is your chance to do something great with it and to become all that you can be. The award-winning John Lee Dumas is going to show you how to take life by the horns. Enjoy!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How I was able to accomplish 1 - 2 years of work in just 100 days.
  • How John turned an idea of helping people achieve their biggest goal into one of the most successful campaigns in history.
  • How accomplishing goals in all areas of life affects your well-being.
  • Why you need to become a master of productivity.
  • What valuable strategies you can use to take back control of your time.
  • The #1 mistake people make when starting their day.
  • How we build up “residue” that blocks us from accomplishing our goals.
  • Why having discipline is radically misunderstood.
  • The difference between a focus time and a refresh time.
  • How the internet can easily manipulate your body’s dopamine system.
  • How to take full control of your focus and execute on your goals daily!

How long do you choose to live? Have you ever thought about that before?

Life is such a delicate thing, yet it’s not something to experience without a zest and vigor that throws caution to the wind, and pulls every ounce out of this opportunity.

Rationality would say that the longer you live, the more opportunity for experiences you have. This is definitely true if, of course, you’re taking full advantage of the situation called “your life”.

Many people live less in terms of number of years, but far more in terms of experiences, fullness, and impact. Abraham Lincoln said, “It’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years.” So when you decide how long you want to live and walk in that direction, make sure that it’s tied to a strong enough why and add plenty of life to those years you’re vying for.

Today we have an absolutely phenomenal teacher, healer, and guide to help you live a longer, more fruitful life. Christiane Northrup, M.D., is a true pioneer and leading authority in the field of health and wellness. She’s here to share some powerful insights that will last you a lifetime (and a much longer, healthier lifetime at that!). So, click play, take good notes, and enjoy!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • What being ageless really means.
  • Where the concept of a retirement age came from.
  • A powerful study from Harvard University that showed how your belief system affects your aging.
  • What specific attributes that centenarians (people who are 100+ years old) all over the world share.
  • What righteous anger is.
  • Why over-screening for diseases could be problematic (this is important!).
  • What stage zero cancer is and the impact it’s having on our society.
  • Why the inventor of the PSA test for men’s prostates regrets introducing it to the world.
  • Some small pros and cons to consider about marijuana use.
  • Why curiosity and asking questions can be a tremendous key to long-term health.
  • How to reset your taste buds.
  • What it means to savor the pleasure of food.
  • How your DNA might be influencing your environment.
  • How movement is tied to longevity.

Most diets are really just guessing games. Even though a diet might claim to be the ultimate solution for health and weight loss, chances are they fail most people. And there’s a big (simple) reason why.

Since the beginning of history, humans have tried to eat everything. If you can get some of it in your mouth, somebody has tried to eat it. Sometimes it made them feel good. Sometimes it made them keel over and die. Most importantly, someone was there to document the results as time has gone on, and the foundational human diet was born.

For many years now, I often sit back and wonder what humans were really designed to eat, and if there’s really any “perfect food” for us. That question has driven me to keep searching, to keep experimenting, and to even roll the dice with my own food choices a time or fifty.

I’m so over taking courageous crap shoots with health now-a-days. I’ve settled in comfortably knowing that I can look back on the wisdom of our ancestors and know exactly what will help me be the healthiest, fittest version of myself.

This is why I love Dr. Cate Shanahan’s work so much. She has truly encapsulated what the human diet looks like. Her seminal work Deep Nutrition takes us all into the intersecting realms of our ancestral diet and what our genes truly expect from us. Today she is gracing us with her wisdom on The Model Health Show, and I’m truly honored to share her with you!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why analyzing healthy people is the missing link in today’s medicine.
  • How Dr. Shanahan began advising the Los Angeles Lakers.
  • What The Human Diet is.
  • What the 4 Pillars of World Cuisine are.
  • Why people generally think that fresh foods refer only to plants.
  • The 3 types of enzymes you need.
  • Why fermented foods are a coordinated effort to make.
  • How our senses were once used for safely testing.
  • Which food compound has been found to be drawn to your joints.
  • Which important nutrient helps hold our cells together.
  • What the closest vegetable equivalent to bone broth would be.
  • How eating organ meats were intertwined in our evolution.
  • How to incorporate more movement and family involvement in food preparation.
  • What commonly overlooked influences can affect your genetic expression.
  • The shocking truth about how vegetable oils impact your body.
  • How to upgrade your oils and fats for better health.

The word “fat” can drum up a whole lot of uncomfortable emotions. Whether it’s fat in our food or fat on our bodies, there’s a pervasive fear around fat that makes many of us turn our heads and run.

You’ve probably heard the saying “mind over matter” before... but what the heck does that even mean?

Well, to put it simply… the thoughts and beliefs that we carry determine the actions that we take in our lives. Your mind is strong enough to move the rest of your “matter”, and that’s why your mindset matters so much.

It’s You vs. You in the only competition that really counts… the competition for real estate in that beautiful mind of yours! The space in your mind that determines your approach to life is up for grabs, and you get to choose. Will it be an empowering mindset that helps to put more success on automatic in your life? Or will it be a disempowering mindset that holds you back and keeps you from reaching your potential? You and I both know which one you will choose, and it all starts now by pressing play and taking action!

Everything in the universe moves. Even the most laidback tree is made of atoms that are vibrating and spinning faster than your eyes can see. They move within and without the earth. They help to shape their environment, and, amazingly, their environment helps to shape them.

It might surprise you to know just how much like a tree you really are. You are, indeed, a mover and shaker within your environment, but your environment helps to move you too. As biomechanist Katy Bowman has shared with us in past conversations, your environment actually shapes your body. That body that you have (take a look down at all of that glory for a second) has been shaped by your actions and environmental stimuli. Your body is best equipped to handle the consistent loads that are placed on it. Whether it from the subtle forces of your office chair or the more obvious forces of a barbell on your shoulders. Your body is your receipt from the loads you’ve experienced. For better or for worse, this is how the system works.

Today we’re going to take things a step further (pun totally intended) as Katy reveals to you the other hidden, yet profound ways that your environment moves you. As you’ll discover today, science moves, nature moves, and food moves in a way that shapes our reality as we know it. Movement matters today more than ever, so take these insights and walk into a more empowered way of life. Enjoy!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • What it means to be a willing student.
  • What drove Katy to live the science she was learning (when so few scientist do).
  • Why science moves and how rigid science beliefs can cause “overuse injuries”.
  • How fixed views can encourage dismissive (and even violent) responses.
  • What your movement fingerprint is.
  • How humans have psychologically displaced themselves from nature.
  • Why a Twinkie isn’t as unnatural as we thought.
  • Why nutrition facts are interesting, but don’t have much functionality in the natural world.
  • How humans are very much like trees (physically and metaphysically).
  • Why human movement is bound to food.
  • The #1 way to move more, eat better, and support the planet all at the same time.
  • Specific tips to move more for your meals (and make your meals radically healthier!).

Where your brain goes, you go. Your brain governs the things that you say, do, and feel each and every moment of your life. Your brain is definitely the command center for the whole show. This we know for sure. But, there’s more to the story...

Just because your brain is the command center, doesn’t mean that it’s calling all the shots. Your brain and body work together in tandem, influencing each other and determining your ultimate destiny in life.

You see, your physical movement can enhance your brain function like few things can. Yet, many of us are led to believe that we make our brain’s better, and get “smarter”, by study alone. But no matter how fancy your pocket protector may be, without getting out and moving your body you’ll only tap into a fraction of what your brain is capable of. That’s what Dr. Wendy Suzuki discovered firsthand.

Dr. Suzuki is a leading neuroscientist who has uncovered some fascinating revelations about the brain. Her hit book, Healthy Brain, Happy Life, is a wonderful compilation of her life’s work that details how we can learn faster, feel better, and keep our brains healthy and youthful for many years to come.

One of her expertises is in the field of memory. Today you’re going to learn what parts of the brain influence your memory, how memories are made, and how to make them stick. Plus, you’re going to learn some powerful insights about brain plasticity, the best form of exercise for your brain, and so much more!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why most conventional science classes don’t connect with people.
  • What brain plasticity really means.
  • The surprising difference that an “enriched environment” and an “impoverished environment” can have on your brain.
  • How “critical periods” impact your brain development.
  • What episodic memories are and how they are formed in the brain.
  • Four clinically proven ways that you can enhance your memory.
  • How learning actually happens.
  • How aerobic exercise powerfully impacts your brain health.
  • The shocking way that mental disorders were treated with conventional medicine just a few decades ago.
  • How Dr. Suzuki brought exercise into the classroom.
  • What Intensati is (and how it can change your body and mind).
  • How students improved on memory tests with one day of aerobic activity each week.
  • The 3 crucial keys to creating a healthy brain and a happy life.

Things are going to happen. Good stuff, not-so-good-stuff… life can be a dance between the two. But, as the research shows, it’s not so much what happens to us, but how we respond to what happens to us that determines the quality of our lives.

When it comes to our health and fitness, millions of people each year raise the white flag and give up on their goals to have something greater because of something they may have never even heard about before. They give up because of their lack of emotional agility.

When you are taking action to change your body and your health, challenges will arise. As much as I don’t want to say this, it’s just part of the process! You are becoming someone you have never met before, so that process will come with a learning curve and relationship adjustments that only emotional agility can enable you to traverse.

Today we have one of the world’s foremost experts on emotional agility here for you to learn from. Dr. Susan David literally wrote the book on Emotional Agility, and what she’s sharing with you today will undoubtedly change your life from this day forward if you take action on it.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How thinking positive can be at odds with what truly helps people thrive.
  • How our thoughts, actions, and stories can cause us to act incongruent with our values.
  • What it means to go from rigidity to agility.
  • What it means to be “hooked” and how this controls our thoughts and actions.
  • How the same thought patterns that keep us safe can also keep us from success.
  • What premature cognitive commitment is (you probably do this a lot!).
  • What the difference is between thinking fast and thinking slow.
  • What the 4 most common emotional hooks are (this is powerful!).
  • How thought-blaming can disempower you.
  • Why it’s helpful to move to the edge of what we’re comfortable with.
  • How our need to be right can lead us to outcomes that don’t serve us.
  • Why negative emotions are so valuable versus a hyper-focus on happiness.
  • What the 4 essential movements are for gaining more emotional agility.
  • What it means to “show up” when it comes to emotional agility.
  • How to rise above our emotions and not be controlled by them.
  • The critical difference between a “have to goal” and “want to goal”.

Billie Jean King said, “A champion is afraid of losing. Everyone else is afraid of winning.”

It’s not that we are incapable of winning. It’s not that the life of our dreams is out of our reach. It’s the fact that many of us forfeit our shot to go for our win because of unwarranted fear and a few other nasty ingredients.

Well, what if you got your hands on the ingredients for a much tastier recipe where YOU get to live the life that you were destined to? That’s exactly what you’re going to get access to today. On this episode we have the founder and CEO of the mega-successful human optimization company Onnit, the great Aubrey Marcus.

Aubrey is the walking, talking example of what living a great looks like. He’ll definitely argue that it wasn’t always like that. At one point he was down to his last dollar working to make his dream come true. Now he runs a multi-million dollar company that’s ushered in a new wave of integrity and care into the supplement and sports performance industry. He went for his win and there was no looking back. Many years and life lessons later, Aubrey is on a mission to share what he’s learned along the way. I’m excited to share this with you and I hope this is a catalyst for you to go for your win too!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why the nucleus is not really the “brain” of your cells.
  • What it means to Go For Your Win.
  • What it means to have a purpose deficiency.
  • What the two parts of your mission are (this is important!).
  • How to uncover what your passion is.
  • How to create connections with others that can help you to live a rich life.
  • Why your beliefs are a strong indicator of whether you’ll be successful or not.
  • Why choice is really a superpower.
  • What it means to practice toughness.
  • What the primary force of resistance is in your life.
  • How to gracefully deal with attachment.
  • How to handle and traverse through apathy to be your best self.

Hippocrates said that, “All disease begins in the gut.” Sure there are some other potential factors for the onset of illness, but for the man considered to be the father of modern medicine to say this, it’s definitely something that we need to stop and think about.

He knew then what we know now, which is the human gut is literally the foundation for our lives. This is the place that food cells get converted into you cells. This is the place that houses over 80 percent of your body’s immune system. This is the place that accommodates the microorganisms that control nearly everything about your health.

The human gut is the birthplace of your microbiome. And today you’re going to learn how to optimize your health by optimizing this remarkable world in your belly.

Dr. Robynne Chutkan is a renowned gastroenterologist, and one of the world’s leading experts on the microbiome. Her strategies and treatments have helped thousands of people worldwide recover from issues like IBS, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, candida overgrowth, gut dysbiosis and more. Her methods are all-encompassing, easy to implement, and they just make sense (as you’ll see!). This information can be absolutely life changing for so many people, so please make sure to share it with your family and friends! Enjoy!

Your thyroid is the master regulator of your metabolism. Any endeavors for healthy weight loss or weight gain are all governed by your hyper-intelligent thyroid gland.

Today, more than ever, there’s a war being waged against your thyroid gland. Environmental pollution, nutrient deficiencies, and unchecked stress are all putting a dire burden on this critical gland. Millions of people are being stricken with thyroid issues, and conventional medicine doesn’t have a solution for it.

The standard approach is to counterattack the thyroid gland using dangerous medications, removing your thyroid gland, or even destroying your thyroid gland with radiation as a method of “treatment”.

If the thyroid is already being attacked by our abnormal conditions today, what sense does it make to attack the thyroid even more? Why wouldn’t we support the thyroid and help it to perform normally? Why wouldn’t we focus on removing the underlying cause of the thyroid condition so that there’s nothing to battle in the first place?

That’s where Dr. Amy Myers comes in.

Amy Myers, MD is a renown leader in functional medicine and author of the New York Times bestselling book The Autoimmune Solution. She’s been a pioneer in helping the public at large truly understand thyroid function and how to safely and naturally reverse even the most difficult thyroid issues. What’s even more powerful is that Dr. Myers is teaching all of us from firsthand experience as a thyroid patient herself. She’s here today to share her story and to share with you how to have amazing, vibrant health by optimizing the function of this remarkable gland.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How Dr. Amy Myers’ own thyroid struggles transformed her life and shifted her career.
  • How conventional medicine treats hyperthyroid and hypothyroid conditions.
  • Why having a functioning thyroid enables your body to respond to your lifestyle.
  • What Grave’s disease is and the symptoms it causes.
  • How conventional physicians tend to misdiagnose and mistreat thyroid conditions.
  • Why normal thyroid labs doesn’t necessarily mean you have healthy thyroid function.
  • What your various thyroid hormones are and what they do (this is important!).
  • What can cause your reverse T3 to go out of optimal range.
  • Why thyroid conditions are far more prevalent today.
  • Which nutrient deficiencies can cause thyroid problems.
  • How your gut health deeply impacts your thyroid function.

How can a society with access to infinite information struggle so mightily with an issue like weight loss? I think that one major reason is that knowledge of the body and how it works is advertised to be complex and difficult to understand. We, as a society, are led to believe that our own bodies (that we call home!) are far too confusing that only a small percentage of people seem to understand the truth about them.

Well, I’m here to share with you that the truth surrounding how your body and metabolism works is simple, attainable, and your birthright to know about. Galileo said, “All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.” Today we have the incredible Dr. Jade Teta on to help you discover how your amazing metabolism works so that you can be empowered to create the body and life you want.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • The amazing things that can happen when “passion bumps into purpose”.

There’s a wonderful quote from Carl Jung that says, “The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.”

Our deepest relationships transform us. And which direction that chemical reaction goes can make all of the difference in the world. You can end up with a beautiful reaction that breathes life into everyone who’s around it, or a not-so-good reaction that can smother everyone in the room. The thing is, we don’t have to sit idly by and just hope that things will mix well together. We can actually uncover which things work great together, and put them into action for ourselves!

There will be nothing that impacts your life more than the quality of your most intimate relationship. Becoming a great “relationship chemist” will bring you more health, happiness, and success than you can even imagine.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • What the #1 most influential thing on your health actually is.
  • What’s instinctual in a relationship and what’s not.
  • What the 6 core human needs are.
  • Why it’s important to find your partner’s #1 driving force.
  • Why “you should just know” is a huge mistake in relationships.
  • How curiosity can be healing for a relationship.
  • Why modeling is critical to relationship success.
  • Why compromising with your partner might not be the best idea.
  • The importance of dating and how to ensure you have 1-on-1 time.
  • How personal development plays a crucial role in development as a couple.
  • What to do when you feel like your partner isn’t with you on your ideas.
  • Why acknowledgement plays a critical role in the evolution of relationships.
  • How health & fitness tie into a healthy, thriving relationship.
  • What the 2 most important words in a relationship are.
  • How to immediately find common ground when you’re in an argument with your partner.

Mediocrity is on sale in our world today. It's cheap, easy to get, and there are even 2-for-1 discounts if you want to bring someone along with you.

Why do we set the bar so low? And why do so many of us settle for a life of quiet desperation when we can live the life of our dreams? My friend Bo Eason has a problem with mediocrity, and he’s on fire to help people wake up to their true potential which (he will explain exactly why) is literally your birthright.

Bo’s story is absolutely incredible. Going from elite NFL player, to critically acclaimed playwright and stage performer, he knows a thing or 10,000 about what it takes to become great at something. He also knows (and will share with you today) how to pivot and carve out a new path for yourself, why it takes just one person to change your entire life, and how to truly step into your power.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • What Bo did at the age of 9 that laid the foundation for his future.
  • Why the plan for your life usually doesn’t look like it’s going to work out.
  • Why Bo didn’t think his skills in football would transfer over into the real world.
  • What life-changing advice Bo received from Al Pacino.
  • Why most people fail miserably when they have the opportunity to learn from someone great (this will shock you!).
  • How we are veritably hardwired to be winners.
  • Why it’s so valuable to learn from the very best person in their respective field.
  • Why practice needs to be the center of your universe.
  • How rituals and practice give you more freedom in life.
  • What some of Bo's most important daily rituals are.
  • Why most people are late when opportunity presents itself.
  • What Bo does to accelerate recovery and improve performance.

How do you actually know what you think?

A lot of us are under the impression that we know what we think because we hear a lot of inner chatter in our heads (straightjacket not included), or because we talk about what we think with other people. But that’s not what we really think.

The inner chatter in your head is mostly surface stuff; fluff. It’s the bright and shining outside of the orange that can easily hide the real juicy stuff in the middle. And the things you think that you share with other people - it’s filtered. A lot. Even your very best friends have probably never heard your deepest thoughts.

There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s a safety mechanism to keep us comfortable and feeling as though we will be accepted. Filtering is socially acceptable because everybody does it whether they realize it or not. The only problem with it is that all of the real thoughts and feelings you have may never get looked at. The good, the bad, and the ugly in so many of our psychies is often heavily suppressed. The not-so-good stuff held in can lead to destructive behavior, depression, and addiction (to name a few) and it’s all clinically proven. And the good stuff held in can lead to living a life that’s not true to who you really are. Your visions, goals, and aspirations not analyzed and expressed can lead to supreme feelings of regret, resentment, and cause you to miss out on the incredible fulfillment that’s possible for you.

So, do you really know what you think? Today it’s time to uncover the things usually hiding in plain sight that are holding you back. Today you’re going to learn about the proven benefits of expressive writing with the one and only Katie Dalebout.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • What controls everything that we think and everything that we do.
  • The surprising clinically proven impact that journaling has on depression.
  • How expressive writing can influence PTSD.
  • Why using unhealthy methods to control our weight is so prevalent in our society.
  • How Katie “accidentally” discovered the vast benefits of journaling.
  • The surprising truth about why we filter ourselves around other people.
  • Why there’s only one way to do journalling wrong.
  • What important thing journaling forces us to do.
  • What most of society uses to not feel their feelings.
  • Why curiosity is an important ingredient for understanding your own thoughts.
  • The 6 critical pointers for getting the most out of expressive writing.
  • The surprising revelation about what happens when you choose to suppress your feelings.
  • Why befriending yourself is a huge key to success and happiness.
  • What our top two favorite journaling exercises are.

Just like any journey in life, the journey to health is a journey of discovery. Each obstacle we face is an opportunity to learn something new about ourselves. Whether it’s healing a disease or finding a way to lose that last tiny bit of body fat, changing our health starts with changing how we think.

Experimentation is our foundational tool. You have to experiment and test things out to truly find out what works for yourself. We are all unique, and what works for your best friend may only set you back on your journey even further. Sure, there are universal principles of health that can take you a very long way. Eat real food, get plenty of movement and exercise, get adequate amounts of sunlight, drink lots of clean water, cultivate healthy relationships, and do meaningful work that fulfills you. These are a few of the basic tenets for living a healthy, happy, successful life.

But what about when you want to take your health to another level? Or what about when you get hit with a real challenging situation (despite following the foundational principles)? This is where a deeper analysis needs to take place. You can take shots in the dark and see if anything (hopefully) hits, or you can take action to uncover what the real solution is by looking in the right place. How do you know unless you look? That’s the mantra of the skilled practitioner today. The guessing game is great if you’re playing Pictionary with your friends. But when it comes to your health guessing can be a massive waste of time, rob you of your results and, at worse, it can even be life-threatening. That’s why I’m so thrilled to introduce you to Dr. Anthony G. Beck.

Dr. Beck has made a habit of looking in the right place for the solutions to all manner of health problems. His advanced testing methods have helped to change my life, and he’s here today to fill you in on what you need to know to be more empowered in your own health journey. Let’s do this!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Whether or not medicinal mushrooms are good for kids.
  • What Balanced Protocol means and why it works so well.
  • Why your gut health is so influential on your health overall.
  • What GI Testing can tell you.
  • Why the best diet in the world might not be the best diet for your body.
  • How changing your food changes your microbiome.
  • Why it’s not just what you eat, but where you eat that can make all of the difference.
  • Why we need diversity in our food.
  • How many different species of bacteria we have in our gut (this is amazing!).
  • Why conventional allergy tests can misleading and outright wrong.
  • Why elimination diets don’t work (wait, what?!).
  • Which incredible blood test can tell you how “clean” your metabolism is running.
  • Why you need to be cautious about buying most probiotic supplements.

In a world of continuous posts and pictures, our consumption and judgement of attraction is at an all-time high. But, what can get lost in all of that is, well, ourselves.

What does it mean to be attractive? How does attraction work? And why does it matter really anyway?

Well, funny enough, attraction is actually tied to our lifeline. We all want to be attractive, and we all want to feel significant. These are basic human needs that help drive along our species. Not solely for the purpose of picking a mate, but being a part of a tribe, and (evolutionarily speaking) having a better chance at survival.

On today’s show we’re talking in-depth about why being attractive matters and, more importantly, simple things that ANYONE can do to become more attractive almost instantly.

Sounds like a pretty big promise? Well, I’ve got the science to back it up. And this isn’t about a superficial, stereotypical, smoke-and-mirrors type of attraction that many of us have bought into today. This is real attraction. This is how to let your inner light shine, and how to be the most attractive version of yourself.

Marilyn Monroe said, “To all the girls that think you’re fat because you’re not a size zero, you’re the beautiful one, it's society who’s ugly.” This important episode will be valuable for men and women all over the world who’ve battled with living up to what society has deemed as attractive. Today is an opportunity to break the chains of poor self-image, and to be more attractive, more healthy, and more of an inspiration to those around you. Enjoy!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why we all desire to be attractive to those around us (the science).
  • What beauty really is (and what it is not).
  • Why we tend to have an unhealthy relationship with beauty.
  • 5 scientifically proven ways to be more attractive.
  • How smiling actually impacts other people’s brains.
  • What facial expression was found to be more attractive than smiling.
  • How sleep deeply impacts attractiveness.
  • What an expansive posture is (and why it matters).
  • The science behind why muscles are so attractive.
  • What personality characteristic is proven to increase your facial attractiveness.

I remember watching the movie Wall-E with my son Braden. It is an animated movie portraying the not-too-distant future where humans have siphoned the world of its natural resources and moved to space, leaving Earth behind as a glorified junk yard. Talk about family fun!

Even though the context was a bit grim, the movie still highlighted the power of love, devotion, companionship, and doing the right thing. It was a good family movie that pulls on your heartstrings. But what most interested me about the movie was the depiction of the devolution of human beings who have become so engrossed in technology that they hardly ever move anymore. Every person in the film barely had to lift a finger as all of their needs were met at the touch of a button. It might sound cool to live in a world like that, but what are the consequences?

Since they lost their desire and need to move, all of their muscles were atrophied. And to say everyone was overweight would be a monumental understatement.

Now, is this reality that far fetched? Are we not seeing the effects that our creature comforts are having on health and our ability to move normally? Yes, we definitely are! And it’s impacting BILLIONS of people whether they realize it or not.

We have to reconnect with what makes us human and what supports the highest expression of our genes. Our genes literally expect us to do certain things, and when we don’t, disease and degeneration programs kick in.

This is why today’s show is so important and absolutely life-changing. We have on one of the world’s foremost experts in human movement. She’s here to help us recalibrate our lives by making some small adjustments that can lead to decades of improved quality of life.

Biomechanist Katy Bowman will help you to discover how to avoid the Wall-E syndrome and be a much healthier, happier, functional version of yourself.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why standing is NOT the solution for sitting too much.
  • What a dynamic workstation is.
  • Why ergonomic products and workstations are destined to fail our health.
  • How our modern conveniences impact our daily movement.
  • What mechanosensors are and how they work in your body.
  • How you can literally create new body fat specifically for sitting on.
  • What some excellent (and surprising) standing workstation options are.
  • Some critical insights to make sure your standing desk isn’t hurting you.
  • The secret life of high heeled shoes and what they can do to your body.
  • What determines the amount of movement you should be getting on a daily basis.

What we are able to have, give, do and become in our lives is largely determined by how we choose to spend our time. Seneca said, “It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it. Life is long enough, and a sufficiently generous amount has been given to us for the highest achievements if it were all well invested.”

A big secret to success in life is learning how to focus on what really matters. And at no other point in human history has focus been such a hugely scarce commodity. If you can reacquire your focus, and place it intently on the thing that matters most, then there’s absolutely no limit to what you can achieve. That’s why I had to talk with Jay Papasan.

Jay is the co-author of the bestselling, mega-hit book The One Thing. Today he’s here to share with you some priceless wisdom to help you live the life you want, break through your mental barriers, and become the best version of yourself. The tips and insights are running wild in this episode, so make sure you’re ready to catch them!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why food and memories are intimately linked up in our minds.
  • Why it’s never your “title” that defines you.
  • What The One Thing really is (this is life-changing!).
  • How attempting to do everything right can be a bigtime spiritual stressor.
  • How to create the “Domino Effect” in the most important areas of life.
  • How to find The One Thing for transforming your body.
  • How you can find out what YOUR one thing is.
  • The surprising impact of multitasking (this is mind-blowing!).
  • What your willpower actually is and how it’s always negative and positive.
  • Why willpower is a nutrition issue.
  • What megaphobia is and how it’s probably impacting your life.
  • What a focusing question is and why it’s a MUST to have one.

“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.” This is a quote from the ever-wise Dale Carnegie. And this is the first statement that comes to mind when I think of the courage of Vani Hari.

Vani is an action-taker. She began her life like many of us in modern society… fast food, fast life, and a fast-track to a date with disease.

Her action-taking nature was being used against her, and it landed her in a hospital bed, facing invasive surgery, and an important life decision.

Vani was hurt. She, like millions of others, put her trust in the corporations that manufacture the food that landed on her plate every day. Through a series of events (that you’re going to learn about today) she discovered that many of these multi-billion companies were putting chemicals in their foods that were leading to serious (and sometimes fatal) conditions for more people than you can imagine.

When she was presented with this information she had a choice. She could sit back and complain, or she could actually do something about it. And she decided to act!

But how in the world can a person take on a multi-billion dollar company? They have deep pockets, sly marketing reps and “fixers”, and legions of lawyers paid top dollar to make sure that your concerns never see the light of day.

It is a modern day David & Goliath story… And you know how that ended for Goliath.

The road hasn’t been easy, but by looking fear in the face, taking inspired action, and having the heart to make a real difference, Vani has helped to make changes to the food system that you have likely experienced firsthand even though you may have never heard her name before.

Today we are honoring Vani, and we are fortunate enough to have her here to share her story. It’s inspiring, and it’s also laced with important life lessons. Enjoy, and please make sure to stay connected with Vani and The Food Babe Army because together WE are really the agents of change for the health of our future generations.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How eating to “fit in” can lead to some big health challenges.
  • How an invasive surgery triggered a transformation in Vani’s life.
  • What surprising role your appendix plays in your health.
  • What inspired Vani to leave her corporate job and pursue a career in health & wellness full-time.
  • Why Kraft Foods used different ingredients in other countries for their super-popular macaroni & cheese.
  • Why artificial food dyes are a huge potential health problem.
  • How Vani was able to get multi-billion dollar food companies to make their products healthier.
  • What some of The Sickening 15 are (and why you need to avoid them!).
  • Why growth hormone is used in our food supply.
  • The shocking amount of the world’s antibiotics that are given to livestock.
  • How pesticides can seriously damage your health.
  • Why shifting our demand is so critical to shifting our food system.
  • How many synthetic ingredients are added to our food supply (this is crazy!).
  • What GRAS is and how food companies use it to do what they want.

I love the quote from Bill Waterson that says, “Experience is food for the brain.” What’s so wonderful about our brains is that they are continuously learning, continuously growing, and continuously making new connections.

Your brain is this miraculous, self-designing entity. It can do so much to change your own world, but it can also change the world at large. However, it can only activate its true potential if we give it the tools to do so.

Experience feeds the brain. And there is likely no greater experience for nourishing and energizing your brain than The Superhero Brain Conference.

This event highlights the greatest thinkers and experts on improving and using your brain that the world has ever seen. Your brain is the governing force that’s directing every thought and every cell in your body. If you truly want to live a healthy, happy, and fulfilled life, then there’s nothing more important than learning how to create a superhero brain.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • What neuroplasticity is and why it’s important.
  • Why learning keeps your brain young.
  • The 3 major ways to create new neural connections in your brain.
  • How your self-talk influences your brain and your life.
  • 3 keys to changing your self-talk to help you reach your goals.
  • How to train your brain to make accurate neuroassociations that boost your productivity.
  • How your sleep quality impacts your memory.
  • Why your gut health is influencing your sleep health.
  • How these sheets can actually improve your sleep quality.

The Declaration of Independence states that we all have the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” by the very nature of us being alive. But, how often do we call upon those rights and use them?

What separates those who lead lives of great success, and those who lead lives of great struggle, are things that are so small that you can likely write them all on a tiny post-it note.

Success starts with ritual. It’s the things you do consistently, not every now and then, that tells the real tale of the results you’ll see in your life.

Couple that with the next important thing, which is to gain mastery over the small things. It’s not the big things… like hitting the lottery, winning the championship, or breaking into the Top 100 Influential People in the World list that 99.999% of the world’s most successful and happy people ever achieve. They are so successful because they’ve dedicated themselves to mastering the small things that bring great results. The old adage goes, “By the inch, it’s a cinch. By the yard, it’s hard.”

One final key ingredient is a willingness to help others. Great success is often tied to the lifeline of bringing value to the lives of others. If you can find a way to combine these three things, there will likely be a lot of great fortune in your future.

Today’s guest, Drew Canole, found a way to put these three things together in a way that really is changing the world. To master his own mind and body he created specific rituals that transformed his health. He also focused on mastering the small things, adding in one piece at a time until he reached unchartered waters of success and vitality. Very soon after, and along the way, he dedicated his life to giving his best to teach others what he’s learned, and in doing so created the FitLife movement.

He’s here today to share his story and some of his best tips for achieving the health (and success) that you are likely a lot closer to than you know.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why Jack LaLanne is such pioneer in the field of health and fitness.
  • What Drew Canole did to transform his health and create one of the most popular health and fitness brands in the world.
  • What makes juicing such a valuable health practice.
  • Why the human body is like a juicer.
  • Why juicing and proper hydration go hand-in-hand.
  • What diet works best with juicing (here’s a hint: ALL of them!).
  • The #1 thing to avoid when making fresh juices.
  • Why ginger is one of the most health-giving things to include in your juices.
  • How your kidneys work to protect you from toxic overload.
  • Specific tips to make sure you’re getting in enough water each day.
  • Why it’s so powerful to “unstuck yourself”.
  • How ingredients like ashwagandha, spirulina, and chlorella can transform our health.

Breakfast. It’s a word that conjures up an array of emotions for many of us.

It’s tied to getting ready for school or work. It’s tied to time with the family or catching up on the news. It’s tied eating some of our favorite foods or loading up on our nutrition.  But most of all it’s tied to the possibility of a new day.

A conversation in the timeless treatise Winnie the Pooh goes like this:

“When you wake up in the morning, Pooh," said Piglet at last, "what's the first thing you say to yourself?"

"What's for breakfast?" said Pooh. "What do you say, Piglet?"

"I say, I wonder what exciting is going to happen today?" said Piglet.

Pooh nodded thoughtfully. "It's the same thing," he said.”

In many ways Pooh was right (although he was an avid “foodie” long before it was a thing). Breakfast and a new day go hand-in-hand. So, shouldn’t we strive to make that meal as inspirational as possible?

Today’s episode is all about the 7 ways to supercharge your breakfast. You’re going to be equipped with simple tips use can use to start your day off right for the rest of your life.

Each day is an opportunity, and these 7 tips are going to help you stack the conditions in your favor to make sure that your days are full of health, energy, happiness, and success.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • The #1 way to connect with other people.
  • The truth about breakfast (is it really the most important meal of the day?).
  • How your first meal impacts your body.
  • What causes overeating the vast majority of the time.
  • Why dietary fats are critical for your brain and nervous system.
  • How Omega 3 fatty acids impact cancer cells.
  • Which foods provide a great source of healthy fats for breakfast.
  • What your microbiome is.
  • Why breakfast is the perfect time to take care of your microbiome.
  • The relationship between breakfast and nutrient deficiency.
  • What type of breakfast was clinically proven to provide more energy throughout the day.
  • How a low carb diet can depress thyroid function.
  • Why you need to carb as needed.

Many people mistakenly believe that being healthy means living a life of deprivation. Sure, if you’re a health conscious person you generally avoid toxic foodstuffs that might nullify your mojo. But people who make healthy choices for the long-term are guided by more pleasure than anything else.

A healthy, sustainable diet is a pleasurable one. It has to be. I’m absolutely blown away by the foods that I get to eat on a regular basis. It’s almost unfair. The flavor sensations, the colors, the textures, the overall party in the mouth experience. I aspire to help people discover just how good real food can be.

First of all, there’s pleasure within the constructs of the diet. The thousands of real foods that you get to eat (based on what feels best for your body) delivers tens of thousands of different options for you to feast on. The pleasure could be from something as savory as a grass fed ribeye, to as sweet and seductive as chocolate cashew ice cream with warm candied pecans on top. All made from real ingredients, of course!

The first pleasure is making the most of what you have access to, and getting the best quality ingredients possible.

The second pleasure comes from going outside of the usual structure of your diet to have a little something unordinary. Pancakes? Yes, please. Nachos? Yes, please. Cheesecake? Wait… Are you sure…? Yes, please!

These things are clearly not as “natural” as the whole foods used to make your other meals, but doing this right can make the difference between a long-term healthy lifestyle, or giving up because you struggle to convince yourself that pancakes aren’t delicious.

The key is, a health conscious person can indulge in these things every now and then, but they are truly there with the treat. They take it in, let their senses explore, and are present in their body to enjoy the moment and then move on. It’s not lying to yourself that these are healthy foods, but giving yourself permission to enjoy a treat and then get back to doing what feels best. I guarantee that if you keep eating pancakes on a regular basis, you’re going to look and feel like a pancake yourself. Indulge, and move on.

So, how do we best navigate this terrain? Well, we’ve got on a special guest who knows a thing or two about how all of this works. Today we have the CEO of the enormously popular website and brand MindBodyGreen, Jason Wachob. He’s here to share with you his best tips for living what he calls a truly “wellthy” way of life. Enjoy!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How Jason went from being a college basketball player to the CEO of one of the top wellness brands in the world.
  • What MindBodyGreen really means.
  • How your environment impacts your genetic expression.
  • Why a one-size-fits-all diet will never work for all of us.
  • Why it’s important to make space for pleasure in your diet.
  • A great form of exercise for connecting your mind and body.
  • Why building a life is more important than building a résumé.
  • Why your brain seeks to affirm your negative thinking.
  • Important questions to ask yourself when choosing your career.
  • Why you should only focus on the things you can control.
  • Why it’s critical to take time to explore.
  • How “thank you” can open new doors for you.
  • What the antidote to negative emotions is.
  • How fun and laughter helps to create a well-thy life.

Paulo Coelho said, “Discipline & freedom are not mutually exclusive but mutually dependent because otherwise, you’d sink into chaos.”

Strangely enough, rules and discipline actually give us far more freedom. The structure we create in our lives is the invisible guiding force that creates the opportunity to do more with the time we are given. Without structure, without rules, you are unknowingly at the mercy of Captain Random.

You see, Captain Random is a super villain. Nothing pleases him more than to see you toil away wasting your time and not seeing the results you want in your life. When a seemingly random thing comes up and throws you off track, he’s twisting his evil handlebar mustache laughing joyfully. For you, the experience is falling off the wagon, taking a loss, or even giving up on your goals altogether. But the secret, unstoppable weapon against Captain Random is the power of your rules.

When you have personal rules in place that guide your decisions, you’ve already got an automated response for the randomness that life may throw your way. For example, you’re on a mission to eat healthy food, and your coworker brings in a box of freshly made donuts (even a few with sprinkles on them… and you know sprinkles are made by tiny tree elves who work for Captain Random), but because you have a rule in place about how you handle junk food, you easily pass with a simple, “No, thank you.”

You don’t feel any deprivation or any restriction because YOU chose that rule. Someone else didn’t impose it on you. You also don’t feel the hit of a poor decision—the tinge of regret, the sour taste of folding so quickly, and the disappointment of being seduced by a sprinkle-faced donut that’s not even in your league. You’ve dated desserts way sexier than that in the past… why did you let this do-not get to you?!

By having rules that govern your choices, you bypass this whole group of problems, and Captain Random is foiled again, running away with his tail between his legs. “I’ll get you next time!” he shouts. But he knows you’re unbeatable, and destined for great success.

Today you’re going to discover the 13 rules of health that I live by. You can take these rules on and apply them to your life, alter them to fit your own life and goals, or use them as inspiration to come up with your own.

Always remember the power of personal rules and use them as the guiding light to help you achieve the greatness you deserve.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why it’s critical to drink water as soon as you wake up in the morning.
  • Why your daily exercise regimen should be adjusted to your goals.
  • How your nervous system can impact your ability to “max out”.
  • How to uncover a passion for exercise.
  • Why you MUST put yourself first when it comes to health.
  • What being a lifetime student means.
  • How to be more present with the people you love.
  • Why delayed gratification is an important option for a healthy lifestyle.
  • The real reason so many people aren’t seeing the results they want in the gym (social time vs. results time).
  • The #1 thing I attribute to my transformation and success in life.
  • Why I make sure to get some time in nature on a regular basis.
  • What sacred rules I have around sleep.
  • What my biggest rules are for the food that I eat (this may surprise you!).

Have you ever had a perfect day?

It’s a day where everything seems to be in your favor. You accomplish all of the things you want. You feel happy and fulfilled. And you go to bed at night wishing that everyday can be just like this.

Aaaaah… It’s a day that has that new car smell. It’s feeling like you have the Midas touch. It’s when life is just flat out awesome.

So, why can’t we have more perfect days like that? Well, the obvious answer is because a lot of crap happens in our life, and it can take our wish of a perfect day and throw it right into the garbage disposal.

The less obvious answer is because we forfeited having our perfect day because we didn’t know the simple, proven steps to create it. The breaking news flash today is that we CAN construct more perfect days. But we have to decide to stop spending our days playing the game of crap-dodgeball that life is flinging at us. We have to be proactive and activate The Perfect Day Formula. And you’re about to meet just the man to help you do it.

There’s a lot more to healing than meets the eye. Whether you’re healing from a tough workout, or healing from a chronic heart condition, numerous forces have to come together make it happen.

Hormones, lymphocytes, inflammatory cytokines, and several other intelligent entities in your body take action to set the ship right when things go wrong. You can either help or hinder your system from doing it’s job. And these are the facts.

If you get a big cut on your arm, and you pack the cut full of crumbled up M&M’s, chances are it’s not going to heal properly. However, if you apply some fresh aloe, and you take some natural anti-inflammatories that also support recovery, like the active compound in turmeric (curcumin), you are supporting your body in normal healing. So, yes, nutrition and smart hygiene matter in recovery, but there’s something else that gets overlooked.

Research shows conclusively that your mind and thoughts have a huge impact on the healing (or lack thereof) of your body. Stress, pessimism, worry, anger, depression… all of these things suppress your body’s natural healing capabilities. Try as your body may, it’s very difficult to make the changes you truly need when your mind-body connection is not in sync. That’s why today’s show is so important.

Today we are covering some of the most valuable insights on strengthening your mind-body connection. To help us out, we are fortunate to have on Tristan Truscott who has an amazing story of healing, and coming back from a place that many other people would’ve long given up on. He’s going to share his immense wisdom and provide you with some crucial tips that will likely last you a lifetime. Now, on to the show!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why you can appear to be tough on the outside but still scared on the inside
  • How helping others to protect themselves nearly destroyed Tristan’s health.
  • How you can easily be distracted from the pain signals your body is trying to send you.
  • Why physical problems are often a results of a deeper issue.
  • Why investing your energy to helping others can make you healthy as well.
  • The surprising impact that qigong has on sleep quality.
  • How qigong actually works to reduce stress and accelerate healing.
  • How movement meditations integrate stress-defense into your tissues.
  • Why stress aggravates depression.
  • What it means to “scratch up the CD” of your negative memories.
  • How reducing stress can result in weight loss.
  • How your body absorbs energy from far more than food.

The first time I tried to lose weight it was by drinking Slim-Fast shakes. The marketing said, “Have a shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch, and then have a sensible dinner.”

I gulped down that sludge of artificial nutrition, followed the plan, and the pounds started coming off. I was happy that it was working. But my victory was short lived.

Being on that plan, and focusing on calories rather than nutrition, left me with a ferocious appetite that would see me overeat at the end of the day… and then a snack… and another snack… until my will power just couldn’t take it anymore. Drinking that can of liquid denial was leaving me nutrient deficient, anxious, and ultimately blocking my weight loss efforts.

You see, it didn’t matter that I was a good person. It didn’t matter that I really wanted to lose weight. It didn’t matter that I tried really hard. Not a single one of those things matter because if my goal is one way, but my plan is taking me in the opposite direction, I’m ultimately going to end up somewhere that I don’t want to be.

Really great, smart people fall victim to clever marketing all the time, especially in the weight loss arena. It’s something so visceral, and so desired for all of us to feel comfortable in our own skin that we’ll cut corners and buy into the next new fad diet without giving it a second thought.

We try, we fail, but we don’t really seem to learn the lesson in this dirty dieting dance. But today that’s all about to change.

Our guest on this episode is the New York Times bestselling author of The Calorie Myth, Jonathan Bailor. He’s on today to drop some serious knowledge bombs when it comes to our mindset and beliefs around losing weight. After checking out this episode, make sure to check the links below for access to his past appearances on the show and special admission to his free half-day masterclass.

Our weight loss battles do not have to be fought alone. True, no one else can do your push-ups for you, but good friends and mentors who really care can guide the way, keep you accountable, and help you change your mind so that you can truly change your body.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why basing your diet around calorie counting can set you up for failure.
  • What nutritional serenity is.
  • Why obesity in not an effort problem.
  • How drinking gasoline can give you a huge understanding of how calories work (crazy, but you’ll see why!).
  • How type 1 diabetes makes you starve to death.
  • Why understanding your goals is critical to the weight loss approach you take.
  • What important weight loss lesson you can learn from Oprah Winfrey.
  • Why calories matter, yet you might want to stop calorie-counting and do this instead.
  • Why “slowing down the problem” is not a real solution.
  • What the 3 biggest economic burdens are in our world today (this is shocking!).

When I was in college, there weren’t any classes on success. There wasn’t a Success 101 course. If there was, I would’ve been there.

There were a lot of classes on the fundamentals… math, science, writing, and even courses dedicated to our majors (like business, engineering, computer science, and health), but there wasn’t any classes that taught us how to put it all together. I’m charged to report that even the best colleges in the world fail to teach us how to actually be successful in our chosen field, let alone in life in general.

Right now it’s more important than ever to grab the study of success by the horns. Life, health, and happiness can quickly run away from you if you’re not fortunate enough to know what makes a successful life versus what allows us to just get by.

Recently, I felt that my formal education experience could lend a hand by giving a framework to discuss what success really looks like.

Anatomy is the study of structure or the internal workings of things. Today we’re going to be breaking down the anatomy of success and take a deep look at the internal workings of passion, commitment, and fulfillment.

Success isn’t merely a metaphysical thing. There are specific principles and insights that will make this the sweetest science you’ll ever learn. So, pull up to the blackboard, grab your notebook, and let the fun begin!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • The #1 muscle you need to develop to create a successful life.
  • Why indecision is often the biggest decision.
  • Why it’s great to be an amateur.
  • How The Model Health Show came into existence.
  • How to exercise your most important success muscle.
  • Why it's critical to dissect your beliefs.
  • What creates your worldview and how to change it.
  • Why expectation is so influential on success.
  • How developing more compassion changes our lives.
  • What it means to digest greatness.
  • How to detox the garbage from your life.

Growing up I never really liked vegetables. As a matter of fact, I didn’t like very many foods at all outside of the staples of hamburgers, fish sticks, macaroni & cheese, and sandwiches. These things tasted great to my tiny palate, and set the template for my eating habits for years to come.

It surprises people when they hear that I didn’t eat my first salad until I was 25 years old. Yep, you heard that right. No green leaf doth pass my lips, and I loved thee not. But everything changed when I learned about the power food had to change my body, and there really was no looking back after that.

Since turning my health around in my early 20’s I’ve eaten more fun, exotic, and even unusual foods than you can shake a finger at. And what I’ve learned is that certain foods have actually been staples in the diets of our ancestors, but we have somehow lost sight of them in lieu of Pop Tarts and pizza.

Today’s powerhouse episode is a reintroduction to the classes of foods that all of us need to add into our diets on a regular basis. These 4 unusual foods will deliver your body more health and vitality than just about any other foods you can name. So, I pray thee enjoy the podcast and shareth with thine friends! And as Shakespeare would say today, “Let’s get it poppin’!”

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Which foods are some of the only “wild foods” that people have access to today.
  • Which food is likely the highest source of potassium and an excellent free radical scavenger.
  • Where to find the highest source of bioavailable iodine.
  • Whether or not you should be concerned about eating sea veggies due to pollution.
  • Why simply eating local might not be enough in our world today.
  • Which gelatinous food can help your body maintain normal levels of antioxidants.
  • Why “essential sugars” need to be a part of your nutrition strategy.
  • What adaptogens are and why they’re so important.
  • How to add more foods like aloe vera and sea veggies into your diet.
  • What the major differences between flax and chia seeds are.
  • How to make sure that your flax and chia seeds don’t get rancid.
  • Why cooking certain foods (versus eating them raw) is a much safer way to eat them.
  • What the #1 antioxidant food in the world is (this may surprise you!).
  • Which foods have the most proven anti-cancer benefits.
  • Which category of foods are critical for healthy digestion and detoxification.

Albert Einstein once said, “Strange is our situation here upon Earth.” In many ways we are smack dab in the middle of realizing what we are and realizing that we have no idea what we are at the same time. Life is complex, beautiful, and definitely weird.

There are so many tricky situations, questions, and answers we can sift through to try to figure things out, but sometimes a strange solution is the order of the day.

When it comes to improving the quality of your sleep, the typical advice usually doesn’t bring much to the table. “Make sure to get 8 hours of sleep.” “Try not to eat before bed.” “Take this drug to help you sleep (even though one of the side effects is doubling your risk of early death).” No thanks. I like to sleep, but I like that being alive part as well.

There are tons of useful tips and strategies to instantly upgrade your sleep in the bestselling book Sleep Smarter. Some of the most interesting (and albeit unorthodox) tips are highlighted here in this episode. Simply listen in, take action on a couple of the tips, and see the results for yourself. Let’s do this!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • How massage therapy works to improve sleep quality.
  • Why so many people have elevated cortisol levels today.
  • Which important hormones are secreted by the body during massage.
  • What the clinically proven benefits of acupressure are (this is shocking!).
  • How “gut smashing” can improve the quality of your sleep.
  • How to get the full benefit of massage on a regular basis.
  • How “earthing” works to reduce inflammation.
  • The proven benefits that earthing has on sleep health.
  • Which surfaces are conductive and enable you to get “grounded”.
  • How different colors of light impact your sleep hormones.
  • What strategies you can use to eliminate light pollution at night.
  • How to use beneficial light therapy to improve your sleep quality.

I have a confession to make…

I don’t like our society’s obsession with losing weight.

As crazy as it might sound coming from someone who’s helped thousands of people lose weight, it hurts my heart a little bit every time I hear someone say they want to lose weight. Here’s why...

Measuring our health by measuring our pounds on the scale has led our culture in the wrong direction. You can eat processed, calorie restrictive “health foods”, over-exercise to the point that you are catabolizing your muscle tissue, and feel bad and hungry all the time, but if you’re losing weight, that’s okay. As a matter of fact, if you’re losing weight, you’re healthy.

This may come as a little bit of a surprise, but just because you lose weight on the scale it does NOT mean that you are healthy. There are many poor states of human health that come coupled with a loss of weight on the scale. And on the other side, just because your weight is higher than you may want it to be, it does not mean that you are UN-healthy. This whole weight loss thing is really relative and (more or less) confusing to the average person who just wants to look good in a bathing suit. And with the way that the media has programmed our opinions of our bodies, there are only like 5 people in the entire world who actually look good in a bathing suit.

I love hearing people say that they want to be healthy. I love hearing people say that they want to take care of their body and treat their body with respect. I love hearing people say that they’ve decided to put a priority on their health, eat real foods, and move their body on a regular basis because they love it. I know those people will be more successful because not one time did they mention weight. They are devoted to doing the things that, chances are, will result in an elimination of excess weight.

If health is the goal, then necessary weight loss can happen as a side-effect. If weight loss is the goal, then health can happen, but struggle and sickness can happen as well. You can lose track of what matters most, cut corners, and end up far worse than when you started off.

Today’s show is focused on health. It’s also focused on more important metrics to track than the weight on the scale that can affirm to you that your journey to better health is working from the inside out.

We have on the author of the New York Times bestselling book The Wild Diet, Abel James, to discuss weight loss vs. fat loss, how to support sustainable weight loss if that’s still your goal, and how to go about changing your body in a smart way that really lasts. This is information that everyone in our society today needs to know, so just click play, enjoy, and make sure to share with the people you care about!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why Abel decided to do a major television show (even though it seems counterintuitive for his brand).
  • What’s going on behind the scenes of major weight loss shows.
  • The shocking cost of medical bills that Abel’s client on the show incurred before starting The Wild Diet.
  • Why weight loss television shows are making a mistake in their tracking.
  • Why health and happiness are often separated from each other in our society today.
  • How muscle loss can slow your metabolism.
  • What Abel’s client Kurt did to lose 87 pounds and more than 22 percent of his body fat during the competition.
  • The special dietary fats that Kurt focused on to give him an edge in weight loss and his health.
  • How people can lose a lot of weight on the scale but not lose a lot of fat.
  • Why excess skin can be a big challenge after an extreme weight loss.
  • Why bone broth could be valuable for your health practice.
  • How making a fool out of yourself can actually help someone else to have a breakthrough in their health (this is powerful!).

Many of us take our health for granted until it's suddenly taken away. When our health begins to slip out of our fingers, it can be a tremendous wake up call in our lives.

Some people receive the call and their life is transformed for the better. Something inside of them changes. They begin living differently. They make changes. They heal.

Many other people we've known and loved have faded away quickly. They believe that nothing else can be done. They give up.

There is an intermingling of these two groups of people for sure, but it's pretty clear in the research that those who recover have something very powerful in their favor. And that is the power of their mind.

When you talk to physician and New York Times bestselling author Lissa Rankin about the power of the mind to heal the body, she isn't just talking about something metaphysical, she is talking about a physical transformation that takes place, and it's based on what you believe.

In today's remarkable episode you're going to learn what role your mind and beliefs play in keeping you well or keeping you sick. You're going to learn the nearly unbelievable clinical benefits of fake medical treatments and how this data can be applied to your life.

You're also going to discover how significant being connected to a bigger purpose in your life is, and how it's tied to your lifeline. This episode is filled to the brim with valuable insights and takeaways that will last you a lifetime. Enjoy, and make sure to share!

In this episode you'll discover:

  • What drove Dr. Lissa Rankin from being a conventional MD to studying and teaching integrative medicine.
  • Why some of the biggest "health nuts" in the world can end up very sick and unhealthy.
  • What the placebo effect actually is.
  • The shocking statistics on the effectiveness of placebo treatments.

When you're sleep deprived, you're not yourself. No... I mean really not yourself.

There's a big impact on your brain, hormones, and we'll just say "emotional stability" that a lack of sleep can play. So much so that top researchers have dove in to discover just how socially messed up poor sleep can make us.

Today you're about to discover how your sleep impacts the health of your relationships in ways that you could never have imagined. Even though some of the research is a little unsettling (and a whole lot surprising), it really shouldn't come as that big of a surprise to us. We all know that other people (but not you, of course) who get grumpy, irritable, and even out-right mean when they are tired. Other people (but not you, of course) can end up being unreasonable, argue for no reason, and even act more negative and pessimistic when they're sleep deprived.

We've all seen it, but we may not of caught it because weren't paying attention to the details surrounding the situation (namely that the person is tired). And even though it isn't you who would normally become the big bad wolf when you're tired, this is a wake up call to see just how you may have done some things and said some things in the heat of a sleepy stupor that really were not in your normal character. Why does this matter so much? Well, or relationships are everything. From our relationships at work, to our relationships with family, to our most intimate romantic relationships, our health and our sleep quality play a big part of them every day.

Today you're going to find out what's going on behind the scene, plus some insights to make sure you're showing up as your best self in the relationships that matter most.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • What part of the brain is responsible for the aggregation of negative emotions.
  • How your brain works to stop you from saying or doing all of the crazy things you might think up.
  • How sleep deprivation can handicap your ability to see from another person's point of view.
  • Why lack of sleep is clinically proven to make you overly emotional.
  • What causes your brain to react to negative images (even though they are not a real threat).
  • How sleep deprivation changes the way you react to perceived criticism.
  • The surprising impact that sleep deprivation has on positive emotions.
  • How your quality of sleep impacts your intimate relationship.
  • Why arguments become much more likely when you're tired (this is funny, but true!).
  • What sleep "quality" really means.
  • Why lack of sleep can be a major problem for important jobs in the workforce.
  • Why your partner's sleep quality can disrupt your health and happiness as well.
  • What simple solutions you can use to reduce snoring problems.

When it comes to stress, you've got three basic options today.

One, you can crumble under the weight of the stress, succumbing to things like heart disease, obesity, and depression that are all linked to chronic stress.

Two, you can run from the modern world and hideout in the mountains (grow a beard), in a monastery (shave your head and/or grow a beard), or even in a naturalist colony (renounce all of your clothing and/or grow a beard).

Three you can step up and do something to ensure that you are breaking the cycle of stress by learning how to enjoy our modern advances without being overrun by them. That's what The Urban Monk is all about.

Dr. Pedram Shojai is here to share some of the most powerful insights you'll ever hear for taking back control of your mind and overcoming stress in a hyper-stressful world. The life that you have right now is a result of your habits.

It's not the things that you do every now and then, it's the things you do consistently that tell the real story of your life.

So, if your habits are so important, how do you actually create the habits that you want and move away from the habits that aren't serving you? That's what this powerful episode is all about.

Eng's Principle says, "The easier it is to do, the harder it is to change." Therefore, we must strive to make the things we want to act on each day easy, automatic, and something that comes as natural as breathing. It's true that some people feel so compelled to exercise that they will fall into depression if they don't have it. It's become easy to them; second nature even. We can all program into our mental software the information that makes our hardware consistently take action in the direction we want. And it starts by learning how we build habits in the first place.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why we feel so weird when our schedule gets thrown off.
  • How patterns of behavior are connected with specific feelings.
  • The big difference is between healthy and unhealthy habits (and how to create healthy habits more easily).
  • Why unhealthy eating habits are so easy today.
  • What the root cause of unhealthy habits like smoking and excessive drinking actually is.
  • Why getting regular exercise tends to be difficult for most people.
  • What the 4 stages of learning are (this is powerful!).
  • How important awareness is in initiating accelerated learning.
  • Why living a healthy lifestyle is not necessarily the answer to being fit.
  • The critical components needed to make an engaging lifestyle change.
  • Why our friends and family members can seem unsupportive when we make a lifestyle change.
  • What the glymphatic system is and why it's so important.
  • What my current daily routine is (morning rituals to evening rituals).
  • Why it's best to use a dual extraction for medicinal mushrooms.
  • The benefits of working out in the morning vs. the afternoon.
  • What EPOC is and how it effects your metabolism.
